Bicycle Rust-Proof Maintenance Tips for Taiwan's Humid Climate

裝備介紹

The Enemy You Can’t See: Moisture

Taiwan is located in the subtropics, with an average annual humidity exceeding 75%. Add in the plum rain season, typhoon season, and afternoon thunderstorms… your bicycle is fighting against moisture almost year-round.

The Most Vulnerable Components

Component Risk Consequence
Chain ★★★★★ Corrosion, accelerated wear
Spokes ★★★★ Corrosion and breakage
Bolts ★★★★ Seized, impossible to remove
Bearings (hubs/BB/headset) ★★★★ Water ingress damage
Cable housing interior ★★★ Inner cable corrosion
Aluminum rim braking surface ★★ Oxidation
Carbon fiber (surface coating) Less affected

Anti-Rust Maintenance Strategies

1. Three Things to Do After Every Ride

Whether it rained or not, after every ride when you get home:

  1. Wipe down the frame: Use a dry cloth to wipe off sweat and moisture
  2. Wipe the chain: Wrap a dry cloth around the chain and rotate the cranks to run it through
  3. Store it upside down: If the bike got rained on, flip it upside down or lean it at an angle so trapped water drains out of the seat tube and head tube

2. Enhanced Protocol After Riding in Rain

If you rode in the rain:

  1. Complete the three steps above first
  2. Spray a water-dispersing lubricant (such as WD-40) on all bolt heads and metal contact points
  3. After the WD-40 evaporates (about 10 minutes), reapply bicycle-specific chain lube to the chain
  4. Wipe down the cassette and derailleur pulleys with a dry cloth
  5. If you have cable housing, drip a little lubricant into both ends of the housing

Note: WD-40 is a water displacer, not a lubricant! It pushes water away, but its own lubricating effect is very short-lived. You must apply proper chain lube after it dries.

3. Preventing Seized Bolts

Taiwan’s humidity makes bolts seize most easily (especially stainless steel bolts paired with aluminum frames).

  • Apply anti-seize compound to all metal bolts during installation
  • Use carbon assembly paste for bolts on carbon fiber components
  • Every six months, remove and inspect important bolts (seatpost clamp, bottle cage bolts, etc.)

4. Bearing Waterproofing

  • Use waterproof grease (such as Phil Wood Waterproof Grease)
  • Do a bearing inspection after the plum rain season ends
  • Consider adding extra dust covers over the bearings

Storage Environment

Good Storage Practices Bad Storage Practices
Indoors (even better with a dehumidifier) Outdoor balcony
Dry, well-ventilated area Basement (prone to dampness)
Hung on a wall or bike stand Directly on the floor
Keep tires inflated Tires deflated during long-term storage

Dehumidifier: The Secret Weapon of Taiwanese Cyclists

If you keep your bike indoors, running a dehumidifier is the simplest and most effective anti-rust measure. Keep the room humidity below 50-60%, and the corrosion rate of metal components will drop dramatically.

Product Purpose Where to Buy in Taiwan
WD-40 Bike Water displacement + light lubrication Hardware stores, Shopee
Finish Line Wet Lube Lubrication for wet conditions Bike shops, Shopee
Phil Wood Waterproof Grease Bearing waterproofing grease Professional bike shops
Anti-Seize compound Prevents bolts from seizing Bike shops, hardware stores
Muc-Off Bike Cleaner Frame cleaning Bike shops, Shopee

Seasonal Maintenance Priorities in Taiwan

Season Maintenance Focus
Spring (Mar-Apr) Prepare for the plum rains, check all waterproofing measures
Plum Rain Season (May-Jun) Wipe down after every ride, increase chain lubrication
Summer (Jul-Sep) Watch for afternoon thunderstorms, full bike inspection after typhoons
Autumn (Oct-Nov) Most comfortable riding season, do a major service
Winter (Dec-Feb) Damp and cold in the north, stay vigilant against rust

Taiwan’s climate is a long-term battle for your bicycle. You don’t need to spend a lot of time on maintenance every day, but developing the habit of “wiping down the bike after every ride” can extend the lifespan of your components several times over.
