The drivetrain of a road bike is one of the core elements of riding enjoyment. Smooth shifting not only improves efficiency but is also key to maintaining rhythm when climbing or sprinting. However, cables stretch from use, and adjustment screws loosen from vibration, all of which gradually reduce shifting precision. What many riders don’t know is that most shifting issues can be restored to factory condition with just an Allen wrench and a few minutes of adjustment. This article provides systematic calibration methods for front and rear derailleurs on mainstream systems such as Shimano and SRAM.
Rear Derailleur Calibration

- Shifting too slow (hesitation before the shift after pressing the lever) → Turn the barrel adjuster counterclockwise (increase tension)
- Shifting overshoots (skips a gear) → Turn clockwise (decrease tension)
- Make adjustments in 1/4-turn increments, repeating the test until every shift is crisp and clean.
Step 5: Adjust the L Limit Screw
Shift to the largest cog and confirm the guide pulley position does not go past the inner side of the largest cog. If the chain shows a tendency to move toward the hub, turn the L screw in to limit the travel.
Step 6: Adjust the B Tension Screw
With the chain on the largest cog, the gap between the derailleur guide pulley and the largest cog should be approximately 5–6mm (Shimano recommended value). Too close causes interference; too far results in sluggish shifting response. Turn the B screw in to tilt the derailleur back and increase the gap; turn it out to decrease the gap.

Front Derailleur Height and Angle Setup
Before adjusting the cable, first confirm the physical position of the front derailleur is correct:
- Height: The lower edge of the outer front derailleur cage plate should be 1–3mm above the tallest tooth of the largest chainring.
- Angle: The long axis of the cage should be parallel to the outer side of the chainring, appearing parallel when viewed from above (tolerance ±1°).

Adjust the L Limit Screw: Place the chain on the smallest chainring (front) + smallest cassette cog (rear). Adjust the L screw so there is approximately 0.5–1mm clearance between the inner side of the front derailleur cage and the chain, with the chain not touching the cage.

Install the Cable and Adjust the H Limit Screw: Shift to the large chainring + largest cassette cog (cross-chain position, used to confirm the limit). Confirm the chain does not touch the outer side of the cage. If it does, turn the H screw in to limit the travel.

Fine-Tune Shifting Precision: In normal riding condition (large chainring + mid cassette cog), if the chain lightly rubs the cage and makes a friction noise, use the barrel adjuster or manually reposition the front derailleur to fine-tune.
Common Front Derailleur Issues
- Cross-Chain Noise: Large chainring + largest cassette cog, or small chainring + smallest cassette cog, creates an excessively angled chain line. This is normal, not a malfunction—just avoid prolonged use of these two combinations.
- Hesitation Shifting to the Large Chainring: Cable tension is insufficient; turn the barrel adjuster counterclockwise to increase tension.
Electronic Shifting Systems (Di2 / AXS) Fine-Tuning
Shimano Di2 and SRAM AXS share the same basic calibration logic, but:
- Limit screws still require manual setup; this step is not automatically compensated by the electronic system.
- Cables (Di2 has no shift cable, AXS is wireless): Di2 uses electronic wires; AXS is completely wireless, so cable stretch is not an issue.
- Micro Adjust: Di2 allows electronic position fine-tuning of ±3 steps via button combinations (refer to the Shimano E-TUBE manual).
- Calibration intervals can be greatly extended: Electronic systems are unaffected by cable stretch, typically requiring only a semi-annual to annual re-check of limit screw settings.
Practical Tips
- New Bike Break-In Period: After the first 200–500 km of riding on a new bike or new cables, cable stretch will degrade shifting performance. At this point, simply add 1–2 turns of tension with the barrel adjuster—no need for a full recalibration.
- Regularly Clean the Cable Housing: If grime accumulates inside plastic cable housing, friction increases and cable return becomes sluggish. It is recommended to replace cables and housing annually.
- Taiwan Has Many Climbs: When using large cassette cogs (e.g., 32T, 34T), the B-gap between the rear derailleur guide pulley and the cassette needs to be reset. Many riders forget to adjust the B screw after switching to a larger cassette.
- After Changing Frames or Derailleurs: Calibration must be done from scratch; do not carry over old screw settings.
