  1. “Light abdominal brace” awareness: While climbing, maintain roughly 20–30% abdominal contraction (not sucking in your stomach forcefully, but lightly engaging the transverse abdominis)
  2. Slight scapular retraction: Gently draw your shoulder blades together to stabilize the upper body and avoid hunching
  3. Active glute drive: On each downward pedal stroke, consciously contract your glutes to produce power rather than relying only on your quadriceps
  4. Neutral pelvis: While climbing, avoid excessive lumbar arching (overextending forward) or posterior pelvic tilt (collapsing the lower back)

Practical Advice

  • Schedule core training on easy ride days or rest days, not after high-intensity sessions, to avoid compromising recovery
  • With 2 regular core sessions per week, results typically become apparent within 4–6 weeks
  • If you have lumbar issues, consult a physical therapist before starting core training
  • Bike fit is also crucial—improper saddle height and handlebar position place additional strain on the core
