Your Bike Needs a Bath More Than You Do
Regularly washing your bike isn’t just about looks. Accumulated dirt and grime accelerate component wear, and the acidity of sweat can corrode metal and the clear coat on carbon fiber.
Washing Tools Preparation
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Buckets x2 | One for soapy water, one for rinsing |
| Neutral detergent | Frame cleaning (dish soap works too) |
| Bike degreaser | Drivetrain |
| Soft-bristle brush | Frame, wheels |
| Stiff-bristle brush | Cassette, jockey wheels |
| Microfiber cloths x3 | Wiping frame, drivetrain, wheels |
| Toothbrush | Cleaning tight gaps |
| Chain cleaner tool | Deep chain cleaning |
| Hose (low pressure) | Rinsing |
Washing SOP
Step 1: Pre-rinse (2 minutes)
Use a low-pressure hose to rinse off surface dirt and dust.
Do not: Use a high-pressure spray! High-pressure water forces water into the bearings, headset, and bottom bracket, causing internal corrosion.
Step 2: Degrease the Drivetrain (5 minutes)
- Spray degreaser on the chain, cassette, chainrings, and jockey wheels
- Wait 5 minutes for the degreaser to work
- Scrub the chain with a chain cleaner tool
- Scrub the cassette sprocket valleys with a stiff-bristle brush
- Clean the jockey wheels with a toothbrush
Step 3: Clean the Frame and Wheels (5 minutes)
- Wash the frame with a soft-bristle brush dipped in soapy water
- Wash from top to bottom (stem first, then top tube, then down tube…)
- Clean the wheel rims and hub shells
- Clean the outside of the brake calipers
Step 4: Rinse (2 minutes)
Rinse off all detergent with low-pressure clean water. Be careful not to spray directly at the bearing areas.
Step 5: Dry (3 minutes)
Dry the entire bike with a clean microfiber cloth. Pay special attention to:
- Bolt heads (prone to water pooling and rust)
- Cable housing entry/exit points (water can travel along the housing into the frame)
- Disc rotor surfaces (must be oil-free! Wipe with a dedicated cleaner)
Step 6: Lubricate (3 minutes)
- Apply chain lube to the chain
- Apply a layer of protective wax or silicone spray to the frame
- Spray a little rust inhibitor on metal bolts
What NOT to Do
| Taboo | Reason |
|---|---|
| High-pressure spray | Damages bearing seals |
| Scrubbing the frame with a scouring pad | Scratches the paint |
| Spraying degreaser on discs/brake pads | Contaminates the brakes |
| Not drying after washing | Water spots and rust |
| Using car wax | May contain silicone that contaminates braking surfaces |
Washing Frequency
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| After riding in dry weather | Just wipe down the frame and chain |
| After riding in the rain | Quick rinse + dry + lube |
| Every 500 km | Full wash |
| After a long ride | Full wash |
| Before a race | Full wash + fresh chain lube |
A full wash takes about 20 minutes. Invest those 20 minutes, and your bike will thank you—by rewarding you with smoother shifting and a quieter ride.
