Zone 1 (Recovery Swim): HRmax 50–60%

Sample workout: 1,200 meters of easy swimming, can mix different strokes, keeping heart rate below 60%.

- For swimmers new to heart rate training, the most common issue is “swimming Zone 2 too fast,” causing heart rate to stay above Zone 3 and preventing the establishment of an aerobic base
- Water temperature affects heart rate: the colder the water, the lower the heart rate (at the same intensity), so zone settings need to be adjusted based on water temperature
- Retest maximum heart rate every 6–8 weeks to ensure training zones remain accurate
