- Incline: Your speed naturally slows on uphills, but RPE stays the same; beginners often mistake slower uphill pace for a decline in fitness
- Fatigue Accumulation: After several consecutive days of training, your pace at the same RPE will drop—this is normal
- Hydration and Diet: Even mild dehydration can completely throw off your pace sense; be sure to hydrate before running

- Learn to run with RPE first, then add GPS data: For the first 3 months as a beginner, rely mainly on feel; after developing an internal pace sense, use numbers as a supplement rather than depending entirely on them.
- Don’t become a “slave to the numbers” after buying a GPS watch: Numbers are tools, not the goal; sometimes deliberately covering the speed display during practice is more beneficial for long-term development.
- A running partner is the best pace teacher: Run with someone slightly faster than you, and you’ll naturally learn to feel that intensity.
