Brakes Aren’t for Stopping—They’re for Speed Control
Taiwan has many classic mountain descents—Wuling down to Hehuan Mountain, Balaka down to Beitou, and Shouka down to Taitung. These long descents put braking systems through a severe test.
The Physics of Braking on Long Descents
The principle of braking is converting kinetic energy into heat. Continuous braking = continuous heat generation.
| Braking System | Overheating Risk |
|---|---|
| Caliper Brakes | High (rim absorbs heat, may cause tire blowout) |
| Disc Brakes | Moderate (discs dissipate heat better, but pads may fade) |
Consequences of Brake Overheating
| System | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Caliper | Rim temperature rises → inner tube air expands → tire blowout |
| Disc | Brake fluid overheats → air bubbles form in fluid → lever goes soft → loss of braking power |
| Both | Pads/shoes overheat → friction coefficient drops → brake fade |
Correct Descending Brake Technique
1. Intermittent Braking
Don’t keep squeezing the brakes! The correct approach is:
- Brake firmly for 2-3 seconds to slow down
- Fully release the brakes for 3-5 seconds to let the system cool
- Repeat this rhythm
This is far better than continuous light braking. Continuous light braking causes heat to build up steadily, eventually leading to overheating.
2. Front/Rear Brake Distribution
- The front brake provides about 70% of braking power (because weight shifts forward during deceleration)
- Alternating between front and rear brakes disperses heat
- On straight sections: prioritize the front brake
- In corners: prioritize the rear brake (to avoid front-wheel skidding)
3. Use Wind Resistance to Slow Down
Sit up, spread your arms—use your body as a brake. This can significantly reduce speed without using the brakes, lessening the load on the braking system.
4. Choose the Correct Line
- The outside-inside-outside cornering line allows you to take corners at maximum safe speed
- Brake early on straight sections—don’t slam on the brakes right before a corner
Pre-Descent Brake Inspection
| Item | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Brake shoes/pads | Sufficient thickness (at least 2mm or more) |
| Brake levers | Normal travel, not too soft |
| Caliper braking surface | No obvious depressions on the rim braking surface |
| Disc rotor | Not bent, bolts tightened |
| Tires | Correct pressure, sufficient tread |
Post-Descent Maintenance
- Let the brakes cool: Don’t touch the disc immediately after stopping (it can exceed 200°C)
- Caliper bikes: Check rim temperature—if it’s too hot to touch, let it cool before storing the bike
- Disc brake bikes: Don’t spray water on the disc while it’s still hot
- Check pad thickness: One long descent can wear away 0.5mm
Practical Advice for the Wuling Descent
The “required descent” for Taiwan road cyclists—from Wuling (3,275m) down to Puli (approx. 500m), a continuous descent of 30+ kilometers.
- Confirm the braking system is in good condition before setting off
- Use intermittent braking throughout the entire descent
- Some corners on Hehuan Mountain are sharp—slow down early
- Temperature rises as altitude drops, so take off layers to stay ventilated
- If the brakes start to feel soft, pull over immediately and let them cool
Only the rider who descends safely gets the chance to climb again.
