Introduction

There is a myth in swim training: “Today is a technique day, so I only work on technique; tomorrow is an endurance day, so I only swim long distances.” This clear-cut training arrangement is practical when training volume is low or when you are just starting systematic training. However, once training reaches a certain level, Combined Training Sessions often deliver higher training efficiency and more comprehensive stimulus.

The core concept of a combined session is: within a single workout, all three dimensions—Technique, Endurance, and Speed—receive meaningful stimulus, and the proportion and order of each part follow a logical rationale.

Why Do You Need Combined Sessions?

A swimmer’s ability is not determined by “technique” or “fitness” alone, but rather:

  • Technical efficiency × Aerobic engine × Speed ceiling — the product of all three

If you only train technique, your aerobic capacity and speed endurance will be insufficient, and you will break down quickly in the latter part of a race. If you only train endurance, your technique cannot remain stable automatically under fatigue. If you only train speed, you lack the aerobic foundation, and speed cannot be sustained beyond a few dozen seconds.

Combined session design ensures all three dimensions are addressed in every workout. Even if the volume for each dimension is modest, the cumulative comprehensive stimulus over time still outperforms single-focus training delivered through periodized switching.

The Basic Structure of a Combined Session

A complete combined session consists of the following five parts:

  First 5 repeats: 20 seconds rest; last 5 repeats: 15 seconds rest (decreasing rest)

Speed Set (400m):
  8 × 50m, Z4 pace, 30 seconds rest

Cool-down (400m):
  400m easy freestyle

Template 3: Speed-Focused Combined Session

Suitable for: pre-race specialization phase, speed breakthrough weeks

Endurance Maintenance Set (400m):
  4 × 100m, Z2 pace, 20 seconds rest (to ensure the aerobic base is not lost)

Cool-down (400m):
  400m easy swimming

Key Principles of Combined Session Design

Principle 1: The Order Cannot Be Arbitrary

Technique work should be done before fatigue accumulates. The speed set is performed after the drill set and endurance set (at this point the nervous system is fully activated, and with some fatigue present, it is an ideal time to train speed endurance). The cool-down always comes last.

Principle 2: The Purpose of Each Part Must Be Clear

Each part should have a clear “what this repeat trains” when designing the session, to avoid the combined session becoming “training everything but mastering nothing.”

Principle 3: Total Volume Management

The total volume of a combined session should be adjusted according to the week’s training goals—more is not always better. Recommendations:

  • Light week: 1800–2500m
  • Standard week: 2500–3500m
  • High-volume week: 3500–5000m

Principle 4: Quality Takes Priority in the Speed Set

Although the speed set in a combined session is usually placed in the latter part of the workout, each repeat still needs to be “genuinely fast.” Do not lower the intensity due to fatigue and swim the speed set as if it were an endurance set. If you cannot maintain the speed target, shorten the distance or increase rest between repeats.

Adjustments for Swimmers in Taiwan

Most swimmers in Taiwan use 25m public pools, and lane session times are limited. Below is a compact combined session designed for a 1-hour lane session:

Warm-up: 300m (10 minutes)
Drill Set: 4 × 75m (technique → normal → technique), 20 seconds rest (15 minutes)
Endurance Main Set: 5 × 200m, Z2 pace, 20 seconds rest (25 minutes)
Speed Set: 4 × 50m, Z4 pace, 30 seconds rest (8 minutes)
Cool-down: 200m (5 minutes)

Time-saving tips:

  • Combine the drill set with the warm-up (use technique swimming as the latter half of the warm-up)
  • Shorten the cool-down to 150–200m
  • Use fixed send-off times for the main set instead of free rest, to avoid wasting time calculating rest intervals

Practical Recommendations

  1. Schedule 1–2 combined sessions per week; the remaining sessions can focus on a single purpose (pure endurance or pure speed).
  2. Confirm “today’s primary purpose” before the combined session—even though it is combined, there should still be one primary training goal, with the others as secondary.
  3. Observe the training feel across all three dimensions: technique feel (“Am I catching the water?”), endurance feel (“Do I have enough energy in the latter part?”), and speed feel (“Did I swim fast in the final speed set?”).
  4. Record the results of each combined session, especially the split times of the speed set—they are the best indicator of training status.
  5. Beginners should primarily use the technique-focused template, ensuring correct stroke mechanics first, then gradually increasing the proportion of endurance and speed training.

Conclusion

The combined session is a hallmark of swim training maturing. When you can simultaneously manage technical awareness, aerobic pacing, and speed explosiveness within a single workout, you are no longer a swimmer who “just swims a lot” or “just swims fast,” but an athlete who can fully control their swimming ability. Design your combined sessions well, and every time you get in the water becomes a complete opportunity for growth.
