Your Suspension Fork Needs Regular Checkups Too
If you ride a mountain bike or a gravel bike with a suspension fork, maintenance is about more than just checking for cracks.
Suspension Fork Maintenance Tiers
| Tier | What’s Involved | Frequency | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic cleaning | Wipe stanchions, clean seals | After every ride | Easy |
| Lower leg service | Oil change, seal cleaning | Every 30-50 hours | Moderate |
| Full service | Damper teardown + air spring service | Every 100 hours or yearly | Hard (shop service recommended) |
Daily Maintenance (DIY)
After every ride:
- Wipe down the stanchions (upper tubes) with a damp cloth to remove dirt
- Pay special attention to the seals (where the stanchions meet the lower legs)
- Apply a drop of fork oil to the seal area and compress the fork a few times to let it work in
Lower Leg Service (Advanced DIY)
This is the deepest service you can reasonably do yourself:
- Flip the bike upside down (fork pointing up)
- Remove the bolts at the bottom of the lower legs
- Gently pull the lower legs down and off
- Drain the old lubricating oil
- Clean the inside of the stanchions and lower legs
- Inspect the foam rings and seals
- Add the correct weight and amount of fresh oil
- Reassemble and test
Important: Different brands and models use different oil weights (5wt, 10wt, 20wt, etc.). Always check your fork’s manual.
Major Brand Service Intervals
| Brand | Lower Leg Service | Full Service |
|---|---|---|
| Fox | Every 30 hours | Every 100 hours |
| RockShox | Every 50 hours | Every 200 hours |
| Manitou | Every 50 hours | Yearly |
What Happens If You Skip Maintenance
- Dry seals → dust gets in → scratched stanchions
- Degraded lubricant → stiction increases → more arm fatigue
- Damper oil breaks down → damping fails → loss of control on descents
DIY vs. Shop Service
| Task | DIY | Shop Service |
|---|---|---|
| Daily cleaning | Yes | — |
| Lower leg service | Yes (with tools and confidence) | NT$500-1,000 |
| Full service | Not recommended | NT$1,500-3,000 |
| Seal replacement | Requires special tools | NT$800-1,500 |
Once your suspension fork is properly serviced, you’ll immediately notice a more refined trail feel and sharper control. That “brand-new fork” feeling isn’t something money can’t buy — actually, it’s exactly something a service fee can buy.
