The Big Deal About Small Parts: Bicycle Shift Cable End Caps and Cable Tips

裝備介紹

Cheap Little Things That Are a Hassle When Missing

There are many unassuming small parts on a bicycle that you normally never notice—but you’ll definitely notice when they’re absent.

Cable Ferrule / End Cap

What it is: A small metal cap that fits over the end of shift cable housing and brake cable housing.

Why it matters:

  • Prevents the end of the housing from fraying
  • Ensures a snug fit between the housing and the frame/components
  • Without end caps, the housing gets crushed and friction on the inner cable increases

Maintenance:

  • Use new end caps every time you replace cables
  • If an end cap falls off, replace it as soon as possible
  • Different housing diameters require different end cap sizes

Cable End Cap

What it is: A small aluminum cap crimped onto the end of a brake/shift cable.

Why it matters:

  • Prevents the cable from fraying into a “broom head”
  • Frayed cable ends can prick your hands or snag on things
  • Keeps the cable end tidy and neat

Installation:

  • Use needle-nose pliers to crimp the end cap tightly onto the cable end
  • Leave about 2–3 cm of cable tail length
  • Trim excess cable with cable cutters

What it is: A special link that connects the two ends of a chain.

Why it matters:

  • Makes it easy to remove and install the chain for cleaning
  • A lifesaver for roadside chain break repairs
  • Quick links for different drivetrain speeds are NOT interchangeable!
Brand Name Reusability
Shimano Quick Link 12-speed can be reused up to 3 times
SRAM PowerLock Not recommended for reuse
KMC Missing Link Some are reusable

Carry one with you: It’s recommended to carry a quick link whenever you ride. It weighs only one gram, but it can save your day when a chain breaks.

Valve Cap

Do you need it? Presta valves on road bikes don’t really need valve caps—the valve design itself is not prone to dirt ingress. But putting them on doesn’t hurt either, and at least it makes the bike look more complete.

Bar Plug

Why it matters:

  • Prevents the exposed handlebar end from stabbing into your body like a knife in a crash
  • Secures the end of the bar tape
  • Required by law in some places

Note: If a bar plug falls off, replace it immediately. An exposed handlebar end can cause serious puncture injuries in a crash.

Where to Buy These Small Parts?

Channel Notes
Bike shop Mostly free or just a few dozen dollars
Shopee Cheapest when buying in bulk
Online bike stores Buy together with other parts

These small parts are individually very cheap (usually NT$5–50), but their impact on safety and function is disproportionately large. Keeping a few spares at home never hurts.
