Why Does Descending Matter?
In road cycling races, time differences on descents can be huge. On the descent from Wuling to Qingjing, the gap between a skilled descender and an unskilled one can be 5-10 minutes. More importantly, poor descending technique can cause serious crashes.
Basic Position
Body Position
- Shift your weight back: Sit your hips back to lower your center of gravity
- Slightly bend your elbows: Absorb road vibration
- Slightly open your knees: Increase stability
- Keep your head up, look ahead: Don’t stare at your front wheel
- Relax your shoulders: A tense upper body affects bike handling
Hand Position
- Keep both hands on the drop bar
- Rest your index and middle fingers on the brake levers
- Grip with moderate pressure — don’t grip too hard
Pedal Position
- When not pedaling, keep both feet at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions (level)
- When cornering, the outside foot stays down (6 o’clock position)
Braking Technique
Basic Principles
- Brake before entering the corner, not while cornering
- Use both front and rear brakes together, with the front brake doing more of the work (about 60-70%)
- Apply pressure gradually — don’t brake abruptly
Common Mistakes
- Using only the rear brake → causes rear wheel skidding
- Braking hard mid-corner → loss of traction and crashing
- Continuously light-braking down a long descent → brake overheating (especially with rim brakes)
Long Descent Strategy
- Brake intermittently: brake for a stretch, then release
- Don’t drag the brakes continuously
- Disc brakes have a clear advantage here
Cornering Technique
Three Steps to Entering a Corner
- Brake to slow down: Complete your braking before entering the corner
- Choose your line: An outside-inside-outside cornering line
- Lean into the corner: Lean the bike and your body together
Line Choice
Entry: stay to the outside
↓
Apex: cut to the inside
↓
Exit: return to the outside
Bike Lean vs. Body Lean
- Leaning the bike: Suited to high-speed, wide corners
- Leaning the body inward: Suited to low-speed, sharp corners
- Advanced technique: Lean the bike while keeping your body more upright (increases the traction limit)
Advanced Techniques
Sightline Management
- Look where you want to go, not at obstacles
- Spot the corner exit before you enter the corner
- The earlier you spot the exit direction, the better line you can choose
Reading the Road Surface
- Watch for changes in road surface color (dark patches may be wet or have oil)
- White road markings are extremely dangerous in the rain
- Watch out for manhole covers, fallen leaves, and gravel well in advance
Consecutive Corners
- Plan the whole line through S-curves in advance
- The exit point of the first corner is the entry point of the second corner
- Don’t just look at the corner in front of you — look two or three corners ahead
Descending in a Group
Descending in a Peloton
- Don’t follow the rider ahead too closely (you need more braking distance)
- Offset your position slightly so you can see the road ahead
- Don’t brake or turn abruptly
- Use hand signals to alert riders behind you to road conditions
Practice Methods
- Find a familiar descent and practice it repeatedly
- Start at low speed and gradually increase speed
- Focus on practicing one skill at a time (for example, work only on line choice this time)
- Ride with skilled descenders and observe their lines
- Don’t take risks on unfamiliar roads
Safety Rules
- Never push far beyond your comfort zone
- Slow down on unfamiliar road sections
- Slow down significantly in poor visibility (fog, rain, glare)
- Make sure your braking system is in good condition
- Wear a windbreaker on descents to prevent hypothermia
- Always wear your helmet properly
