Training Stress Score (TSS) is a training load quantification metric developed by Andrew Coggan based on power training concepts. - CTL (Chronic Training Load): the weighted average of TSS over the past 42 days, reflecting your fitness base (your “aerobic fitness bank”)
- ATL (Acute Training Load): the weighted average of TSS over the past 7 days, reflecting current fatigue status
- TSB (Training Stress Balance) = CTL - ATL: a positive value indicates a fresh state, a negative value indicates fatigue
Managing TSB Before a Race

Goal of “tapering” 7-14 days before a race: gradually raise TSB from -15 to -25 during the build phase back up to +10 to +20, while making sure CTL does not drop drastically (reduce volume but maintain a small amount of high intensity).
Practical Recommendations
- Do not chase high TSS in the first quarter: a weekly CTL increase of no more than 5-8 TSS is a safe upper limit — rapid increases are a major cause of injury
- TSS only accounts for cycling training — stress from other sports needs separate consideration: if you also run or swim at the same time, actual fatigue is far higher than what TSS shows
- Recovery week TSS should not be too low: reducing to 60-70% of normal is sufficient — stopping training entirely actually causes the body to “lose direction”
