Designers Think It’s Beautiful, Mechanics Find It Painful
Internal cable routing gives a bike frame a clean, sleek look, but every cable replacement becomes a battle against the dark, confined spaces inside the frame.
The Golden Rule
Never pull out the old cable without a replacement ready.
Once you pull the old cable out, threading the new one through the frame’s internal curves is like trying to thread a needle in the dark.
Method 1: Old Cable Guide Method (Most Recommended)
- Pull out the old inner cable (but do not remove the cable housing/outer casing)
- Tape a guide string to the end of the old cable housing
- Slowly pull out the old housing, and the guide string will be drawn through the frame
- Use the guide string to pull the new housing through the frame
Method 2: Magnet Method
Best suited for “disaster recovery” situations where all old cables have already been pulled out:
- Prepare strong magnets (the Park Tool IR-1.2 kit includes magnets)
- Insert an inner cable into the frame from the entry port
- Use the magnet on the outside of the frame to guide the inner cable along the routing path
- At the exit port, use the magnet to pull the cable end out
Method 3: Vacuum Cleaner Method
Sounds crazy, but it actually works:
- Drop a thin string into the entry port
- Use a vacuum cleaner at the exit port
- The airflow will pull the string through the inside of the frame
- Use the string to pull the new housing through
Internal Routing Considerations
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Housing end caps | Always install them to prevent the housing from getting stuck inside the frame |
| Housing length | Leave enough length; too short will affect steering |
| Vibration protection | Wrap tape around the housing where it enters the frame to prevent rattling noises |
| Waterproofing | Apply silicone grease at the entry port to prevent water ingress |
| Documentation | Take photos of the routing path for reference during the next cable replacement |
Special Challenges of Fully Internal Routing
Many modern high-end models (such as the Giant TCR, Specialized Tarmac, Trek Madone) feature “fully internal routing”—everything from the handlebar to the derailleurs/brake calipers runs entirely inside the frame. Cable replacement on these bikes is even more difficult:
- Requires special bent-tip cable housing
- May require removing the stem to replace cables
- Hydraulic brake internal routing is even more complex (requires bleeding and reassembly)
Recommendation: For fully internal routing bikes, take it to a shop for the first cable replacement. Watch how the mechanic does it, take notes, and try DIY next time.
Recommended Tools
| Tool | Purpose | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Park Tool IR-1.2 | Magnet guide kit | ~NT$1,500 |
| Thin string + tape | DIY guide method | ~NT$0 |
| Cable housing cutter | Clean housing cuts | NT$500-1,000 |
| Silicone grease | Waterproof sealing | NT$100-300 |
Internal cable routing is indeed much more troublesome than external routing. But once you master the right techniques, it just becomes “more time-consuming” rather than “mission impossible.”
