Before cutting the steerer tube, make sure you’ve completed your bike fitting adjustments:

- Try different spacer configurations to find the ideal position
- Consider future needs: as you age, you may need a higher bar position

Step 1: Determine the Cut Length
- Install the fork into the head tube
- Stack your chosen spacer configuration
- Place the stem on top
- Critical: The top of the steerer tube should sit 3-5mm below the top of the stem
This 3-5mm gap allows the stem top cap to press down on the star nut and properly preload the headset bearings. If the steerer tube is too long (protruding above the stem), the top cap will press on the tube instead of the star nut, leaving play in the headset.
Step 2: Mark the Cut Line
- Use a marker pen to draw the cut line on the steerer tube
- Double-check: Remove the stem and spacers, and measure the actual length to be removed
- Wrap masking tape 5mm above and below the cut line
- This serves two purposes: protecting the carbon surface + preventing delamination during cutting
Step 3: Secure the Fork
Never clamp the carbon tube directly in a bench vise! Carbon fiber cannot withstand concentrated clamping forces.
The correct approach:
- Use a dedicated carbon tube clamping fixture
- Or install the fork in the frame and secure the frame in a work stand
- If using a vise, clamp on a metal section (if available), or pad the carbon tube with soft material between the tube and the vise jaws
Step 4: Install the Cutting Guide
- Slide the guide over the steerer tube
- Align it with the cut line
- Tighten the locking mechanism
- Verify the guide is level (use a spirit level or a phone app)
If you don’t have a guide, you can make a simple version from thick cardboard, but accuracy will suffer.
Step 5: Make the Cut
- Put on your dust mask and safety glasses
- Place the saw blade into the guide’s slot
- Light pressure, slow strokes: Let the weight and sharpness of the blade do the work
- Maintain a steady angle and pace
- Don’t press down hard! Carbon fiber isn’t metal—force will cause delamination
- Slow down even more as you near the end of the cut
Step 6: Finish the Cut Edge
- Remove the masking tape
- Lightly sand the cut edge with 400-grit sandpaper to remove burrs
- Follow up with 600-grit for a finer finish
- Confirm the cut edge is smooth and free of delamination
- Wipe away all carbon dust with a damp cloth
Step 7: Install the Star Nut
If your steerer tube uses a traditional star nut:
- Use a star nut installation tool
- Drive the nut into the tube, approximately 15-20mm from the top
- Confirm the nut is level and secure
If using an expander plug (common on carbon forks):
- Insert the expander plug into the tube
- Tighten the bolt to expand and secure it
- Confirm it’s firmly fixed
Step 8: Assembly
- Apply carbon assembly paste to the steerer tube (in the area where the stem clamps)
- Install the spacers and stem in order
- Install the top cap bolt and lightly tighten to preload
- Check for headset play: grab the front brake and rock the bike back and forth—there should be no movement
- Check steering smoothness: lift the front wheel and the handlebar should turn freely
- Finally, torque the stem bolts (recommended 4-6 Nm, per the stem’s specifications)
Common Mistakes and Cautions
Things You Should Absolutely Never Do
- Don’t use an angle grinder or power cutting tools: Too aggressive—carbon fiber will delaminate
- Don’t use metal-cutting blades: Teeth are too coarse
- Don’t cut without a guide: If the cut goes crooked, there’s no fixing it
- Don’t let the steerer tube protrude above the stem: Headset preload will fail
- Don’t ignore carbon dust: Inhaling it is harmful to your lungs
Differences with Aluminum Steerer Tubes
If your fork is carbon but has an aluminum steerer tube (common on many mid-range models):
- A standard pipe cutter can be used
- Finish the cut edge with a file
- Deburr both the inside and outside edges
- Use a star nut (not an expander plug)
