The key to resolving the risk of hyponatremia is to “replenish electrolytes with every fluid intake.” Here’s how to do it in practice:

  • Bottle setup: It is recommended to carry two bottles—one with sports drink and one with plain water—and alternate between them
  • Salt tabs: Take one tablet every 1–1.5 hours (sodium content approximately 200–500mg), especially in high heat or when sweating heavily
  • Electrolyte powder: Can be added to plain water and is more economical than buying bottled sports drinks
  • Natural foods: Salty dried plums, pickled side dishes, and cheese slices can also replenish sodium

Recommended electrolyte ratio (per 500ml of fluid):

  • Sodium: 300–500mg
  • Potassium: 100–150mg
  • Magnesium: 30–50mg

Timing of Fluid Intake on the Road

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Recommendations:

  • Actively drink 150–200ml every 15–20 minutes
  • Replenish fluids after climbs and at rest stops
  • Avoid drinking large amounts at once (over 500ml); drink in small, frequent portions instead
  • Drink 400–500ml before setting off in the early morning

  • In Taiwan’s summer heat, consider bringing an insulated water bottle or cooler bag
  • If you feel dizzy or nauseous after riding 120km, first replenish with a sodium-containing drink (not plain water) and rest briefly
