Cycling Paradise in Eastern Taiwan: The Complete Guide to the Huadong Valley Route

Introduction

The Huadong Valley, stretching from Hualien to Taitung, is considered by many to be Taiwan’s most beautiful cycling route. Nestled between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range, the valley runs approximately 180 kilometers from north to south, featuring flat terrain, relatively light traffic, and fresh air. With its rich layers of rice paddies, villages, and indigenous culture, it offers compelling reasons for both first-time cyclists and seasoned island-circumnavigation veterans to return again and again.

Route Overview

There are two main route options for cycling through the Huadong Valley:

Route Features Best Suited For
Provincial Highway 9 Wide road surface but heavy traffic Efficiency-oriented riders
County Road 193 (Hualien section) Rural foothill roads, almost no traffic Riders seeking tranquility
County Road 197 (Taitung section) At the foot of the Coastal Mountain Range, wide open views Riders seeking scenery

It is strongly recommended to combine County Road 193 (Hualien section) with County Road 197 (Taitung section). These two roads stay far away from the disturbance of large vehicles on Provincial Highway 9, running almost entirely alongside farmland, orchards, and indigenous tribal villages—this is the true essence of valley cycling.

Suggested Itinerary (Three Days, Two Nights)

Day 1: Hualien City → Ruisui (approx. 75 km)

Depart from Hualien Railway Station and enter County Road 193 through the Shoufeng farming area. This stretch features continuous rice paddies, with farmers often visible working in the fields and Amis villages scattered along the way. Midway, you’ll pass the Guangfu Sugar Factory, where you can enjoy nostalgic ice pops, before continuing south to Ruisui. The Ruisui Ranch, famous for its fresh milk, can be visited in the afternoon.

  • Supply points: Shoufeng, Fenglin, Guangfu, Ruisui town center
  • Accommodation: Ruisui homestay area

Day 2: Ruisui → Guanshan (approx. 65 km)

Heading south from Ruisui, you’ll pass through the Fuli rice sea and Chishang’s Dapo Pond—this is the valley’s most renowned rice paddy scenic area. When the rice turns golden in autumn, the scenery is like a painting. Chishang’s Brown Boulevard is the famous setting from the film “Island Etude”; the bike path is flat and closed to cars, making it an excellent choice for photography and leisurely riding.

  • Supply points: Fuli, Chishang town center
  • Accommodation: Homestay options available in both Guanshan and Chishang

Day 3: Guanshan → Taitung City (approx. 45 km)

The Guanshan Ring Town Bike Path is a tourist route planned by the county government. Before leaving, you can do a full loop to experience the relaxed atmosphere of riding around town. Heading south into the southern section of the Taitung Valley, the Beinan River bed opens up wide, and the aroma of Chishang rice drifts through the air. Upon reaching Taitung City, you can ride north along the Taitung Seaside Park and enjoy the sunset over Taitung Bay.

Culinary Culture Experience

Food is a major highlight of the Huadong Valley journey:

  • Guangfu Sugar Factory: Milk ice pops and sugarcane juice, a taste of Taiwan’s sugar industry history
  • Ruisui Hot Spring Town: Sodium bicarbonate hot springs, paired with local ranch fresh milk set meals
  • Fuli Rice Cuisine: Fuli rice products—rice noodles and rice dishes all made with local valley rice
  • Chishang Bento: The birthplace of the TRA Chishang bento, featuring pork chops and bamboo shoots—a signature valley delicacy
  • Guanshan Pork Knuckle: Renowned for its springy skin and tender meat, the perfect reward after a full day of riding

Practical Tips

  • Taking bikes on trains: Hualien, Ruisui, Yuli, Fuli, Chishang, and Guanshan all have railway stations, offering flexible options
  • County Road 193 caution: Some sections merge with Provincial Highway 9—stay alert
  • Season: April–May (before the plum rains) and September–October (after typhoon season) are the best times
  • Sun protection: The valley has intense sunlight; full-body sun protection and sunglasses are recommended

Conclusion

The beauty of the Huadong Valley needs no exaggeration. Once you step onto the pedals and enter County Road 193, the rural tranquility, majestic mountains, and fresh air will speak directly to you. This is one of Taiwan’s most ideal cycling tourism destinations. Whether your trip lasts a few days or longer, the Huadong Valley will deliver satisfaction beyond your expectations.
