HED Wheels: The Value King of the Triathlon World

In the world of triathlon, there’s a brand whose name is almost synonymous with “high-value carbon wheels”—that brand is HED. Hailing from Minnesota, this brand isn’t as flashy as Zipp, nor as expensive as ENVE, yet it commands an exceptionally loyal following in the triathlon community.

Brand History

HED Cycling was founded by Steve Hed in 1984 in Minnesota. Steve Hed was one of the pioneers of bicycle aerodynamics, applying aerospace aerodynamic knowledge to bicycle wheel design as early as the 1990s.

One of Steve Hed’s most famous contributions was the promotion of the “wide rim” concept. While the entire industry was still chasing ever-narrower rim profiles, he was already arguing that wider rims provided better aerodynamic performance and tire support. Later developments proved him right—now every brand is making wide rim designs.

Sadly, Steve Hed passed away in 2014 due to an accident, but his team and philosophy continue on. HED is currently run by Anne Hed (Steve’s wife), maintaining a small-but-refined brand style.

Product Lineup

Vanquish Series (Top-Tier Carbon Wheels)

Model Rim Depth Weight (Front+Rear) Internal Rim Width Taiwan Price (Approx.)
Vanquish RC Pro 4 44mm 1,360g 23mm NT$95,000
Vanquish RC Pro 6 60mm 1,440g 23mm NT$95,000
Vanquish RC Pro 8 80mm 1,580g 23mm NT$95,000

The Vanquish series is HED’s latest flagship, with “RC” standing for Race Cutting edge. It uses HED’s newest carbon fiber layup technology and rim profile designs. The Pro version comes with DT Swiss 240 hubs, delivering top-tier rotational efficiency.

Jet Series (Classic Carbon Wheels)

Model Rim Depth Weight (Front+Rear) Internal Rim Width Taiwan Price (Approx.)
Jet 4 Plus 43mm 1,490g 21mm NT$52,000
Jet 6 Plus 60mm 1,565g 21mm NT$55,000
Jet 9 Plus 90mm 1,780g 21mm NT$58,000
Jet Disc Plus Disc Wheel 1,100g (Rear Only) NT$52,000

The Jet series is HED’s most classic product line and the brand’s best-seller. The Jet 6 Plus in particular is regarded in triathlon circles as the epitome of “best value carbon wheels.”

Ardennes Series (All-Round Aluminum Wheels)

Model Rim Depth Weight (Front+Rear) Taiwan Price (Approx.)
Ardennes RA Pro 25mm 1,480g NT$42,000
Ardennes RA Performance 25mm 1,600g NT$28,000

The Ardennes series is HED’s aluminum wheel lineup, renowned for its exceptional ride quality. While they lack the aerodynamic benefits of carbon wheels, the braking performance and all-weather reliability of aluminum rims make them an excellent choice for training wheels.

HED’s Core Philosophy

Pioneer of Wide Rims

HED was one of the first brands to advocate for wide rim designs. Their theory is simple: when the rim is wider than the tire, airflow transitioning from the tire to the rim doesn’t create a “step effect” but flows smoothly across, reducing drag. This concept was considered heretical in the early 2010s, but has now become the industry standard.

Focus on Real-World Ride Feel

HED’s design philosophy emphasizes actual ride feel over pure wind tunnel data. They believe that a wheelset that’s fastest in the wind tunnel isn’t a good wheelset if it’s jarring and uncomfortable on real roads or uncontrollable in crosswinds.

Reasonable Pricing

HED has long maintained more accessible pricing than brands like Zipp and ENVE. This isn’t because of inferior quality, but rather a brand philosophy—they believe good wheels shouldn’t be the exclusive privilege of a select few.

Triathlon-Specific Advantages

Why Do Triathletes Love HED?

  1. Wide Range of Deep Sections: From 43mm to disc wheels, the common triathlon setup of a 60mm front and disc rear can be easily configured with HED
  2. Reasonable Pricing: Triathletes need dedicated race wheels and training wheels—HED’s price point makes owning both sets feasible
  3. Durability and Reliability: Triathlon races don’t allow mechanical support, so wheel reliability is paramount—HED has an excellent reputation in this regard
  4. Disc Wheel Option: The HED Jet Disc Plus is one of the highest-value carbon disc wheels on the market

Taiwan Market Information

HED’s visibility in Taiwan isn’t as high as Zipp or Shimano, with wheels primarily brought in through a few importers. Some cyclists choose to purchase directly from the US, as HED’s official website supports international shipping.

Taiwan’s triathlon market continues to grow, with major triathlon events held in Kenting, Taitung, and elsewhere. HED has a certain level of recognition within this demographic. The Jet 6 Plus in particular, at around NT$55,000, is extremely competitive in the carbon wheel market.

Buying Recommendations

  • Triathletes seeking value: The Jet 6 Plus is the classic choice
  • Triathletes seeking the ultimate: Vanquish RC Pro 6 front + Jet Disc Plus rear combination
  • Road cyclists on a budget: The Vanquish RC Pro 4 is an underrated gem
  • Training wheels: The Ardennes RA Performance is tough and a joy to ride

Summary

HED is a brand truly led by engineers—no flashy marketing, no astronomical pricing, just solid products and a deep understanding of aerodynamics. Steve Hed’s legacy lives on in every pair of wheels. If you’re a pragmatic cyclist chasing performance without wasting money, HED deserves a serious look.
