Fundamentals of Climbing Technique
Climbing is the most challenging aspect of road cycling and a key differentiator of rider ability. Good climbing technique not only saves energy but also makes you safer and more efficient on mountain roads.
Three Key Factors Affecting Climbing Performance
- Power-to-Weight Ratio (W/kg): The most important metric when climbing
- Pedaling Efficiency: Good pedaling technique reduces energy waste
- Pacing Strategy: Allocating energy wisely is key to finishing long climbs
Seated Climbing vs. Standing Climbing

- Lean Forward: Shift your center of gravity slightly forward to maintain front-wheel traction

- Maintain a Steady Cadence: Keep it between 70-85 RPM
- Hold the Top of the Bars or Hoods: Opens the chest for easier breathing
- Sit Back on the Saddle: Engage the gluteal muscles
Standing Climb Technique
- When to Choose It: Short hill sprints, accelerating at gradient changes, relieving muscle fatigue
- Body Movement: Rock the bike side to side with each pedal stroke, using body weight to assist
- Hold the Drops or Brake Hoods: Provides stable support
- Engage Your Core: Tighten your abdomen to avoid wasting energy
Strategies for Different Gradients
Gentle Climbs (3-5%)
Stay seated, maintain a higher cadence (80-90 RPM), no need to deliberately slow down.
Moderate Climbs (6-8%)
Shift down one or two gears, maintain a cadence of 70-80 RPM, and stand up for 30-60 seconds periodically to engage different muscle groups.
Steep Climbs (9-12%)
Use the easiest gearing; cadence may drop to 60-70 RPM. Alternate between seated and standing every 2-3 minutes.
Very Steep Climbs (>12%)
You may need to stand frequently at this point; be careful not to let the front wheel lift. Shift your center of gravity forward and grip the handlebars firmly.
Long Climb Pacing Strategy
Using Taiwan’s famous Wuling climb as an example (55K, 2,700m elevation gain):
- First 1/3: Keep effort at 70-75% of FTP, should feel easy
- Middle 1/3: Maintain 75-80% of FTP, steady rhythm
- Final 1/3: Increase to 80-90% of FTP depending on how you feel
Climbing Training Methods
- Hill Repeats: Choose a 10-15 minute climb segment, repeat 3-5 times
- Tempo Long Climbs: Find a 30+ minute climb and ascend steadily at Zone 3 intensity
- Low-Cadence Strength Training: Climb at 50-60 RPM to build muscular strength
- Climbing Intervals: 3-5 minutes of all-out climbing x 5-8 sets
Common Mistakes
- Starting Too Fast: Pushing too hard at the very beginning of a climb
- Gripping the Handlebars Tightly: Stiff arms cause unnecessary energy expenditure
- Staring at the Front Wheel: You should look 5-10 meters ahead at the road
- Forgetting to Shift: Shift down early; don’t wait until you can’t turn the pedals
