Campagnolo Bora Series: The Wheel Legend of a Century-Old Italian Brand
In the world of bicycle components, Campagnolo is the very embodiment of the word “legend.” Founded in 1933 in Vicenza, Italy, the brand not only invented the Quick Release but also defined the standard for road bike drivetrains. Their wheel product line—the Bora series—is the most historic and romantic presence among carbon wheels.
Brand History: From Garage to Hall of Fame
Tullio Campagnolo missed out on victory in a 1927 race because a frozen wingnut wouldn’t open, and this experience led him to invent the quick-release mechanism. In 1933, Campagnolo was officially founded, beginning a journey that would change cycling history.
On the wheel front, Campagnolo launched the first-generation Bora carbon wheels in 1999, named after “Bora,” a strong cold wind from northern Italy. More than 25 years on, Bora has become a classic in the carbon wheel world.
Current Product Lineup
Bora Ultra WTO (Top-tier)
| Model | Rim Depth | Weight (Front + Rear) | Inner Rim Width | Taiwan Price (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bora Ultra WTO 33 | 33mm | 1,310g | 19mm | NT$115,000 |
| Bora Ultra WTO 45 | 45mm | 1,385g | 19mm | NT$115,000 |
| Bora Ultra WTO 60 | 60mm | 1,475g | 19mm | NT$115,000 |
WTO stands for Wind Tunnel Optimized. The Bora Ultra WTO is Campagnolo’s flagship wheel, equipped with USB (Ultra Smooth Bearing) ceramic bearings and the CULT bearing system. The CULT bearing system uses full ceramic balls and specially surface-treated raceways, resulting in an extremely low friction coefficient that spins as if there were no resistance at all.
Bora WTO (Advanced)
| Model | Rim Depth | Weight (Front + Rear) | Inner Rim Width | Taiwan Price (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bora WTO 33 | 33mm | 1,395g | 19mm | NT$78,000 |
| Bora WTO 45 | 45mm | 1,465g | 19mm | NT$78,000 |
| Bora WTO 60 | 60mm | 1,545g | 19mm | NT$78,000 |
The main difference from the Ultra version lies in the bearing system—the WTO uses standard USB steel ball bearings rather than CULT full ceramic bearings. The carbon rims themselves are identical.
Hyperon Ultra (Ultra-lightweight)
| Model | Rim Depth | Weight (Front + Rear) | Taiwan Price (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyperon Ultra | 26mm | 1,165g | NT$130,000 |
The Hyperon is Campagnolo’s ultra-lightweight climbing wheel. At 1,165g, it is nearly unmatched among production wheels. However, the shallow 26mm rim depth offers no aerodynamic advantage on flat roads—it is built purely for climbing.
Levante (Gravel/All-weather)
| Model | Rim Depth | Weight (Front + Rear) | Inner Rim Width | Taiwan Price (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Levante | 36mm | 1,515g | 25mm | NT$72,000 |
Core Technologies of Campagnolo Wheels
CULT Bearing System
CULT (Ceramic Ultimate Level Technology) is the bearing technology Campagnolo takes great pride in. It uses Cronitect stainless steel raceways paired with silicon nitride ceramic balls, further enhanced by a special surface hardening treatment. The result is a nearly frictionless bearing system—mount the wheel on a stand and give it a spin by hand, and it will keep turning for minutes before stopping.
Another advantage of CULT bearings is durability. Stainless steel raceways won’t rust, and ceramic balls won’t wear out, which means under normal use, CULT bearings are virtually maintenance-free for life.
WTO Rim Profile Design
The Bora WTO rim profile has been repeatedly validated at Campagnolo’s wind tunnel testing center (located at the Vicenza headquarters). The rim surface features a micro-dimpled texture, similar in concept to Zipp’s ABLC but more refined. Campagnolo claims these dimples consistently reduce drag across yaw angles from 0 to 20 degrees.
G3 Spoking Pattern
Campagnolo’s signature triple-group crossing lacing pattern. The rear wheel uses a 2:1 configuration with two alternating spokes on the drive side and one spoke on the non-drive side. This design balances spoke tension on both sides, improving lateral stiffness and drivetrain efficiency.
Carbon Spokes (Bora Ultra Exclusive)
What makes the Bora Ultra WTO special is its use of carbon fiber spokes. Carbon spokes are lighter than steel spokes (saving approximately 40-50g) and offer better aerodynamics, but they are also more fragile—a lateral impact can cause breakage, and they cannot be replaced individually.
Campagnolo Compatibility Issues
This is a critical consideration when purchasing Campagnolo wheels. Campagnolo hubs traditionally use their own freehub body standard, which is incompatible with Shimano/SRAM. While it is now possible to switch by swapping the freehub body, this adds complexity to usage.
If you use a Shimano or SRAM drivetrain, be sure to confirm before purchasing whether a Shimano/SRAM-compatible freehub body is included or available as an option.
Taiwan Market Analysis
Distribution Channels
Campagnolo is distributed in Taiwan by the Hsiao Tai Ho Group and can be found at major bike shops across the island. However, compared to Shimano, Campagnolo’s market share in Taiwan is relatively low, inventory may not always be abundant, and popular models may require pre-ordering.
Pricing Position
In the premium carbon wheel market, the Bora Ultra WTO’s NT$115,000 price point sits in the mid-to-upper range. Given the CULT bearings and carbon spokes, this price is reasonable. The Bora WTO at NT$78,000, on the other hand, is quite competitive.
Is It Suitable for Taiwan’s Environment?
Very much so. The Bora WTO 45 is the most balanced choice for riding in Taiwan—the 45mm rim depth offers decent aerodynamic benefits on flat roads, isn’t too heavy for climbing, and handles crosswinds well. CULT bearings won’t rust in Taiwan’s humid climate, making them a sound long-term investment.

Summary
When you choose Campagnolo Bora, you’re not just buying a pair of wheels—you’re inheriting nearly a century of Italian cycling culture. In an era obsessed with efficiency and data, Bora reminds us that performance can be romantic, and quality can be elegant. The silky-smooth rotation of CULT bearings, the distinctive visual of the G3 lacing pattern, the ultimate pursuit of carbon spokes—these details form Campagnolo’s unique brand appeal.
