Introduction

In 2015, at a triathlon event where on-site wind and waves exceeded safety standards, the organizers announced the cancellation of the swim leg 30 minutes before the start. Some athletes broke down on the spot, having spent the entire season preparing for that race’s swim. But more importantly, that decision kept every athlete safe.

Reading open water weather is not an optional skill—it is a fundamental responsibility for every swimmer. Knowing when you can swim and when you should stay on shore is a judgment call more important than any swimming technique.


1. Key Weather Indicators at a Glance

2. How Wind Direction Affects Swimming

Wind direction determines the direction of the waves, and therefore which direction you’ll experience push or resistance in the water:

  • Tailwind (wind from behind): You can ride the push of the wind and waves for extra speed, but the return leg may become headwind and head-on waves
  • Headwind (wind against you): Physically draining; every 5 m/s of headwind adds roughly 15–25% more perceived resistance
  • Crosswind: Disrupts breathing rhythm; if you breathe to the right and the wind comes from the left, you’ll inhale sea spray with every breath
  • Gusts: The hardest to predict; gusty winds create irregular wave patterns that most interfere with navigation

Taiwan-specific considerations:

  • Northeast monsoon (October to March): Wind and waves in northeastern waters often exceed safety standards
  • Southwest monsoon (May to September): Sudden strong gusts frequently develop in the afternoon off the south and west coasts
  • Within 3 days after a typhoon: Swell can remain significant even if the sky is clear—stay cautious

3. How to Assess Wave Height

Official wave forecasts use “Significant Wave Height,” which represents the average height of the highest one-third of waves. The actual largest wave can reach 1.5–2 times that value.

How to visually estimate wave height on site:

  • Have a companion wade into knee-deep water and observe where the waves reach on their body
  • Alternatively, observe the difference between the highest and lowest points of the water surface
  • If waves exceed the height of a standing swimmer’s waist (approximately 0.8–1 m), assess carefully before proceeding

4. Responding to Lightning and Thunderstorms

Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, and being in the water during a thunderstorm is extremely dangerous:

  1. Exit the water immediately upon seeing lightning—do not wait to confirm thunder
  2. Follow the “30-30 rule”: if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of seeing lightning, the storm is within 10 km—end water activities immediately; wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before re-entering the water
  3. After exiting, do not take shelter under trees, on high ground, or near metal objects

5. Weather Information Sources

Weather resources available in Taiwan:

  • Central Weather Administration (cwb.gov.tw): Marine forecasts, wave charts, wind speed forecasts
  • Coast Guard Administration marine forecasts: Taiwan Strait and eastern waters
  • Windy.com or Windguru: High-resolution wind speed and direction forecasts, favored by surfers and open water swimmers
  • PW (Pangwave): A Taiwan-based local sea conditions discussion community with real-time reports from the water

Recommended check-in times: Start tracking 3 days before race day, confirm the night before, and do a final check on race morning.


6. Race-Day Decision Framework

When facing uncertain weather, use this four-question framework to make your decision:

  1. Can I safely complete the swim in these conditions? (Technical ability)
  2. If something goes wrong, can rescue reach me within minutes? (Support environment)
  3. Will the weather improve or worsen over the next 2 hours? (Trend assessment)
  4. Is the cost of not swimming today greater than the cost of an accident? (Risk vs. benefit)

If any of the four questions gives you pause, the answer is “don’t swim.”

True open water experts are not those who dare to enter the water in any conditions—they are those who clearly know their limits and know how to preserve their strength. Weather-reading ability is experience accumulated over time. Observe, record, and compare against actual sea conditions during every training session, and your judgment will grow alongside your swimming skills.
