The Tour de Taiwan, Wuling Challenge, KOM Climbing Challenge… Taiwan has many events that require riding on consecutive days. For many cyclists, day one feels great, day two starts to feel heavy, and by day three the body can feel completely different. How to maintain safe and effective climbing under three days of accumulated fatigue is the most important skill in multi-day events.
The Mechanism of Fatigue Accumulation
Fatigue from consecutive riding comes from multiple layers:

Pacing Strategy for Three Days of Climbing
Day One: Start Conservatively, Leave Room to Spare
The most common mistake in multi-day events is riding too hard on day one. When you feel good, it’s often difficult to hold back, but spending too much time above 85% FTP on day one will leave glycogen incompletely restored for day two, and performance will drop significantly on day three.
Day One Recommendations:
- Target power: 75–82% FTP (lower end of Zone 3–4)
- Strictly keep heart rate below 85% HRmax
- Do not accelerate early even if it feels easy
- Fuel more aggressively than a single-day event: replenish every 30 minutes
Day Two: Assess Fatigue, Adjust Flexibly
Day two is the most critical pacing day in a multi-day event. If glycogen has not been fully restored by this point, forcing day one’s power output will accelerate the collapse on day three.
Day Two Fatigue Assessment:
- If morning resting heart rate is 5+ bpm higher than usual, recovery is insufficient, and target power should be reduced by 5–10%.
- If leg heaviness does not noticeably improve after a 10-minute warm-up, intensity should likewise be reduced.
Day Two Recommendations:
- Set targets based on recovery status (70–82% FTP)
- Do not chase speed on climbs; focus on completing the elevation gain
- Fuel adequately on descents, especially carbohydrates and electrolytes
Day Three: Give It Your Best, Not Everything You Have
On day three, the body is at its highest fatigue state, and it is also the day to “show results.” The goal at this point is not to set a personal record, but to complete the final day’s climbing challenge in a safe and effective manner.
Day Three Recommendations:
- Allow heart rate to be higher than the previous two days (fatigue causes heart rate to run higher at the same power output)
- If your condition is unexpectedly good, you may moderately increase intensity on the final climb
- Increase fueling frequency again; do not let energy become the bottleneck
Key Daily Recovery Measures
Nutritional Recovery
- Within 30 minutes after riding: Replenish carbohydrates + protein (recommended 3:1 ratio), such as rice + chicken, or a sports recovery drink.
- Before bed: Replenish slow-digesting carbohydrates again (such as oatmeal or sweet potatoes), which aids overnight glycogen resynthesis.
- Avoid alcohol: Even just one beer significantly interferes with muscle glycogen recovery.
Active Recovery
- 15–20 minutes of easy spinning after each day’s ride (Zone 1): A better way to clear lactate than stopping immediately.
- Cold water immersion (10–15°C, 10–15 minutes): A research-supported method for reducing muscle inflammation, which can decrease delayed onset muscle soreness the next day.
- Light stretching: Focus on the quadriceps, glutes, and calves, holding each static stretch for 30–60 seconds.
Sleep First
Among all recovery methods, sleep is the most important and the most easily overlooked. During multi-day events, it is recommended to:
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep each night (1 hour more than usual)
- Do not use your phone for more than 1 hour after riding (blue light affects falling asleep)
- Keep the room cool (18–20°C) to promote deep sleep
Managing Psychological Fatigue
Three consecutive days of climbing tests not only the body, but also the mind. On day two or day three of climbing, thoughts like “I’m already so tired, why am I still doing this” will keep surfacing.
Effective psychological strategies:
- Segment goals: Don’t think about the whole ride; just think about “getting to the next aid station” or “climbing past this switchback.”
- Recite a pacing rhythm: Use breathing rhythm or pedal counting to occupy your attention and reduce excessive focus on fatigue.
- Accept that fatigue is normal: Multi-day events are inherently not ridden in optimal condition. Sharing feelings of fatigue with teammates helps with psychological adjustment.
