Pingtung Hengchun Peninsula Loop: A Coastal Cycling Route from Eluanbi Lighthouse to Kenting
Introduction
While most of Taiwan enters the cold winter months, the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung still enjoys brilliant sunshine and pleasant temperatures. As the southernmost landmass of Taiwan, surrounded by the sea on three sides, its tropical coral reef coastline offers spectacular scenery. Cycling around the Hengchun Peninsula is one of the most coveted cycling trips every winter.
The Hengchun Peninsula Loop spans approximately 50–60 km, connecting the highlights of Taiwan’s southern tip, including Eluanbi Lighthouse, Nanwan, Kenting, Houbihu, and Sheding Park. The terrain is mostly flat throughout, making it an easy ride suitable for cyclists of all levels.

Key Attractions
Eluanbi Lighthouse
Taiwan’s southernmost lighthouse, built during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, it is the largest surviving lighthouse in Taiwan. The coral reef coastal protection area surrounding the lighthouse is the best spot to observe tropical marine ecology. Standing in the lighthouse plaza, you feel a special sense of awe at being on Taiwan’s southernmost point.
Nanwan
Nanwan is the most famous swimming and water-play area on the Hengchun Peninsula, with azure waters, fine white sand, and a wide variety of water activities. When cycling past Nanwan, it is highly recommended to stop and sit on the beach for a while to soak in the tropical, laid-back atmosphere found only at the southernmost tip.
Kenting Street
While Kenting Street is bustling with nightlife every evening, daytime is actually the best time for shopping and sampling local delicacies. In winter, away from the crowds, you can leisurely enjoy grilled corn, grass jelly milk pudding, and coconut ice, experiencing a tranquil Kenting quite different from the summer hustle and bustle.
Houbihu Fishing Harbor
Houbihu is an important fishing base on the Hengchun Peninsula and a mecca for diving enthusiasts. The seafood restaurants by the harbor serve freshly landed catches, with lobster, sea urchin, and grouper being seasonal delights.
Jialeshuei
Located at the northeastern corner of the peninsula, with towering reefs and surging waves, this is one of the few scenic areas in Taiwan that preserves its pristine coastal landforms. With almost no tourism development, the wave-cut terrain on the reefs is truly breathtaking.
The Fall Wind: A Unique Challenge of the Hengchun Peninsula
When cycling on the Hengchun Peninsula, one cannot avoid the “luo shan feng” (fall wind)—a strong northerly wind prevailing from October to March each year, with wind speeds reaching over 10 meters per second, sometimes even up to 20 meters. The impact of the fall wind on cycling cannot be ignored:
- Tailwind (riding south): Speed increases dramatically, giving a thrilling sense of flying, but you must pay attention to bike stability on descents.
- Headwind (riding north): Pedaling becomes strenuous and energy consumption doubles. It is advisable to use a low gear ratio and ride patiently.
- Recommended route direction: If visiting in winter and riding the loop, it is recommended to ride clockwise (heading west) to take advantage of the fall wind for acceleration.
Practical Tips
- Best season: October to April of the following year (Kenting’s peak season is actually the hot summer, so it is advisable to avoid the high temperatures of July to September).
- Starting point: It is recommended to start from Hengchun Old Town, where parking is convenient and there are complete accommodation and supply facilities.
- Bike rental: Bicycle rental shops are available on Kenting Street and in Hengchun city center, offering both standard bicycles and electric-assist bikes.
- Supplies: Convenience stores and harbor restaurants are plentiful along the route, with supply points roughly every 5–10 km.
- Safety notes: Some sections run near cliffside coastlines. In strong wind conditions, be sure to maintain a steady speed to avoid being blown over by crosswinds.
Conclusion
The Pingtung Hengchun Peninsula Loop is the route in Taiwan that comes closest to the “tropical island cycling dream.” While cyclists in northern Taiwan huddle indoors training against the cold, you can leisurely ride along the coral reef coastline under Hengchun’s warm winter sun, breathing in the salty sea breeze carried from the South Pacific. There are no tough climbs here—only breathtaking scenery and food that make you never want to stop. Hengchun is Taiwan’s southernmost gift to all who love to ride.
