Why Open-Water Pacing Is So Hard to Read

Pacing references during pool training:

  • Check the wall every 25m / 50m

Open water has none of these:

  • No wall to reference

  • You ease off after entering the “comfort zone”

  • Average pace: 1:50/100m
  • Conversion: about 27.5 seconds per 25m
  • Stroke rate: about 56-60 spm
