Attack Timing: When, Where, and How Many Watts

An “Attack” in a race is the key move to break away from the peloton and form a breakaway. But 80% of amateur attacks fail—not because of insufficient power, but because of poor timing.

The Essence of an Attack

An attack is a “short burst of extremely high power output” designed to create a time gap before the peloton can react. Once the gap reaches 10-15 seconds, the psychological cost of chasing for the peloton outweighs the physical cost, and they give up the chase.

The Three Dimensions of an Attack

1. When

Best timing:

  • Mid-race (40-70% of the distance): The peloton is fatigued but not yet in sprint preparation mode
  • Right after the peloton has taken on feedings: Attention is scattered
  • The final 1 km of a steep climb: Rivals are “saving energy” and cannot react immediately
  • After a downhill corner: The group is strung out right after the turn

Worst timing:

  • First 30 km of the race: The peloton is fresh and will easily reel you in
  • 20 km from the finish: Sprint teams are chasing at full speed
  • Flat, exposed sections: You will burn all your energy alone

2. Where

Terrain selection:

Terrain Attack Difficulty Success Rate
Short steep climb (5-10%, 500m) Low High
Long gradual climb (3-5%, 3km) Medium Medium
Flat road, tailwind High Low
Flat road, headwind Extremely high Extremely low
Downhill corner Medium Medium
Town street crossing Medium Medium

Best terrain for attacking: Short steep climbs. The gradient naturally slows the peloton’s speed, amplifying your explosive power.

3. How Many Watts

Standard attack power profile:

  • First 10 seconds: 85-90% of Peak Power (establish the gap)
  • Next 30 seconds: 130-150% of FTP (open up the gap)
  • Next 2 minutes: 110-120% of FTP (consolidate the lead)
  • After that: 95-105% of FTP (maintain speed)

Example (amateur rider with FTP = 300 W):

  • 0-10 seconds: 1000 W
  • 10-40 seconds: 420 W
  • 40 seconds to 2 min 30 sec: 360 W
  • After 2 min 30 sec: 300 W

The “Visual Deception” of an Attack

The “fake moves” pro riders make before attacking:

  1. Pretend to drink: Reach for the bottle, the peloton’s attention drops, then suddenly ditch the bottle and attack
  2. Drop to the back of the peloton: Rivals think you’re tired, then accelerate from the side when a gap opens at the front
  3. Multiple small surges: Accumulate fatigue in your rivals, then go for the real effort once they stop paying attention

Criteria for a Successful Attack

Within 1 minute of launching:

  • Gap < 5 seconds: Failure, the peloton easily catches you
  • Gap of 5-15 seconds: 50/50, you need to hold on for another 5 minutes
  • Gap > 20 seconds: 70% success rate, you can settle back to FTP cruising
  • Gap > 30 seconds: 90% success rate, you can wait for teammates to bridge across

Decision Tree After an Attack

1 minute after launching
├─ Gap > 20 seconds?
│ ├─ Yes → Settle into cruising, wait for teammates/watch the peloton
│ └─ No → Check if the peloton is still reacting
│ ├─ Strong reaction → Give up, return to the peloton
│ └─ Weak reaction → Push for another 30 seconds, gamble on it

Common Mistakes of Amateur Riders

  1. Attacking too early: In a 100 km race, attacking at 50 km means being dangled alone for 50 km
  2. Attacking too late: Only moving in the final 10 km, when the peloton is already in sprint mode
  3. Going solo: No teammates bridging across, doomed to fail
  4. Attacking on the flats: No terrain cover, the peloton easily brings it back
  5. Going all-out after launching: Accumulating fatigue, eventually getting caught and countered

Conclusion

An attack is the most romantic move in racing—one rider against the entire peloton. But romance comes at the cost of a high failure rate. Before you launch, ask yourself: “Why am I attacking now? How confident am I?” Think it through, then stomp on that pedal.
