ZRL Race Format Overview
The Zwift Racing League is organized by WTRL, running 8 weeks per season, synchronized globally:
- Schedule: One race per week, Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday evenings
- Formats: Team Time Trial, Scratch Race, Points Race
- Categories: A+, A, B, C, D (based on Zwift Power scores)
- Scoring: Dual leaderboards for individuals + teams
Category Standards (zFTP w/kg)
| Category | zFTP (w/kg) | Typical Power (70kg body weight) |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | > 4.6 | > 322W |
| A | 4.0-4.6 | 280-322W |
| B | 3.2-4.0 | 224-280W |
| C | 2.6-3.2 | 182-224W |
| D | < 2.6 | < 182W |
Race Pace Differences by Category
D Category (Beginner-Oriented)
- Pace: Average speed 35-40 km/h
- Characteristics: Frequent surges, overall low intensity
- Tactics: Hide in the main pack, go all-out in the final 1km
C Category (Amateur Advanced)
- Pace: Average 40-43 km/h
- Characteristics: Fierce power surges at the start, steady in the middle
- Tactics: Hold 130% FTP for the first 2min, recover in the middle section
B Category (Semi-Professional)
- Pace: Average 43-46 km/h
- Characteristics: Highest density zone in category racing, many breakaways
- Tactics: Stay with the front 30% of the pack, focus attacks on climbs
A/A+ Category
- Pace: Average 46-50 km/h
- Characteristics: Complex strategy, dense team coordination
- Tactics: Assign work roles (climber, sprinter, pace-setter)
The First 3 Minutes: Deciding the Entire Race
Zwift starts have no real aerodynamic draft buffer, average power in the first 3 minutes = highest of the entire race:
| Segment | Power (% FTP) | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 0-30s | 150-180% | Starting surge |
| 30s-2min | 120-130% | Position confirmation |
| 2-5min | 100-110% | Enter cruising |
| After 5min | 85-95% | Average load |
Fail to survive the first 5 minutes → dropped from the pack → riding solo the entire race.
Climbing Attack Timing
Short Climbs (< 1min)
- Accelerate to 110% FTP 200m before the climb
- Push to 130-150% in the final 30s before the summit
- Hold 110% for 30s after the summit (to avoid being counter-attacked)
Medium Climbs (2-5min)
- Use surge tactics: baseline 95% FTP + 3-4 surges of 30s @ 130%
- Observe teammates’ and opponents’ positions
Long Climbs (Alpe du Zwift)
- Pure FTP battle
- Find a steady rhythm at 95-100% FTP
- Increase to 105% in the final 5min
Sprint Tactics
Lead-out
- Final 1km: pull at 300-350W to build speed
- Final 500m: hand off to the sprinter
- Ensure the sprinter stays in the wheel position
Sprint Finish
- Final 200m: stand up and surge at 800-1200W
- Pay attention to Power-up timing (detailed below)
Team Coordination: 5-6 Rider Team Roles
| Role | Task | Body Type Fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sprinter | Final sprint | 75-80kg |
| Climber | Climbing surges | 55-65kg |
| Domestique | Pull the pack, protect the team leader | 70-78kg |
| All-rounder | Tactical mobility | 65-75kg |
| TT specialist | TTT mainstay | 70-80kg |
Training Recommendations
- Do 1-2 Sprint Races the week before the event to practice starts
- Add 6-8×30s @ 150% FTP micro-surges to your weekly workouts
- Do 1 Group Ride per week to practice wheel-sucking techniques
ZRL isn’t just about pushing watts—it’s a game of strategy.
