What is PMC? Why Every Endurance Athlete Should Learn It

The Performance Management Chart (PMC) originates from the research of sports scientists Andrew Coggan and Hunter Allen. Initially designed for road cyclists, it is now widely applied in endurance sports such as triathlon and road running. Its core concept is to use a mathematical model to track the accumulation of training stimulus (fitness) and its expenditure (fatigue), and to predict your “race readiness” at any given point in time.

The Three Key Metrics

CTL (Chronic Training Load) — “Long-Term Fitness”

CTL is the exponentially weighted moving average of Training Stress Score (TSS) over the past approximately 42 days (about 6 weeks), representing your current aerobic base fitness level.

  • The higher the value, the stronger your aerobic engine
  • Raising CTL requires a progressive increase in weekly training volume
  • Typical amateur triathlete CTL: 50–100; professional athletes can reach 150 or higher

ATL (Acute Training Load) — “Short-Term Fatigue”

ATL is the exponentially weighted moving average of TSS over the past approximately 7 days, reflecting your current level of fatigue.

  • The higher the value, the greater your recent training load and the deeper your fatigue
  • ATL rises rapidly during high-volume training weeks and drops quickly during recovery weeks

TSB (Training Stress Balance) — “Form/Freshness”

TSB = CTL - ATL, and it is the most important output of the PMC, representing your current competitive form.

How a Typical Training Cycle Appears on the PMC

A standard 3+1 training cycle (3 weeks of training + 1 recovery week) appears on the PMC chart as follows:

  • Weeks 1–3: ATL climbs (fatigue accumulates), TSB gradually turns negative, CTL rises slowly
  • Week 4 (Recovery week): ATL drops quickly, TSB returns to positive, CTL dips slightly but remains elevated
  • 2–3 weeks before race: Taper begins, ATL drops significantly, TSB steadily climbs into positive territory
  • Race day: TSB target falls between +5 and +20

Practical Advice: Setting Your CTL Goal

Different race goals correspond to different CTL requirements:

  • Olympic Distance Triathlon (OD): CTL 60–80 is enough to finish; 80+ to race for a result
  • Half Ironman (70.3): CTL 80–100 is the baseline preparation level
  • Full Ironman (140.6): CTL 100–130; professional athletes 140+
  • Full Marathon Running: CTL 70–90 (running load only)

A safe weekly CTL increase is approximately 3–5 points. Rapid increases can easily lead to injury or illness—never add training volume aggressively week after week.

Cross-Validating TSB with HRV

TSB tells you your status “in theory,” while HRV tells you your status “physiologically.” When the two align (positive TSB + normal or high HRV), you can confidently execute high-intensity workouts. If TSB looks good but HRV is low, your body may be under hidden stress (work, lack of sleep), and you should slightly reduce intensity.

Common Pitfalls

  • Over-chasing a high CTL: CTL is a means, not an end. A CTL without a race goal is meaningless
  • Ignoring accumulated negative TSB: A TSB persistently below -30 accumulates chronic fatigue and increases injury risk
  • Tapering too long before a race: Pushing TSB too high (+30 or above) can instead leave muscles stiff and lose training feel

Conclusion

The PMC is not a fortune-telling tool, but it is the most powerful “rearview mirror” in endurance training, showing you what you have done over the past few weeks, where your body is right now, and how much time you still have to work with before race day. Once you learn to read these three curves, your training plan will evolve from going by feel to a systematic, data-backed operation.
