Why Does Power Training Need Periodization?

  • Weeks 3–4 (Accumulation Phase): Increase training volume and intensity to reach maximum training stimulus.

  • Week 6 (Taper Phase): Reduce training volume by 40–50% while maintaining intensity, allowing supercompensation to occur.

Session content:

  • Keep the core exercises from Weeks 3–4
  • Remove the highest-volume exercises (such as forward bounding)
  • Add “competition simulation” exercises: simulate the explosive demands of race scenarios (e.g., runners add acceleration after downhill running; cyclists add a 15-second all-out effort simulating a bunch sprint finish)

Week 6: Pre-Competition Taper Phase

Weekly frequency: 1 session (4–5 days before the race)

Session content (only 15–20 minutes):

  • Box jumps 3×5 (easy, quality-focused)
  • Jump rope 2×30 sec (confirming rhythm)
  • Single-leg hops 2×6/leg (proprioceptive activation)

Purpose: Maintain the neuromuscular “activated state” without adding any new fatigue. Research shows that completely stopping power training before a race causes neural activation levels to drop within 5–7 days, so keeping one low-volume session is an effective “activation maintenance strategy.”

Monitoring Metrics for the 6-Week Plan

To ensure the plan is executed effectively, it is recommended to track the following metrics:

  • Cyclists: Replace box jumps with seated sprint explosive pedaling as a complementary exercise
  • Triathletes: Do not schedule plyometrics after the two sport-specific training days each week, to avoid excessive accumulated fatigue
