  • Lactate clearance improves after the 5-minute mark: The first 4–5 minutes are the most dangerous pacing window. This is when lactate accumulates fastest; if you are already over pace, the second half will see a significant drop in speed.
  • Psychological advantage: Passing opponents in the second half provides positive psychological feedback, which helps maintain rhythm.

Tip 3: Conserve energy with efficient push-offs at turns
Make full use of every turn’s push-off (extending fully) to reduce the work of your arm strokes. This is a key energy-saving factor for long-distance swimmers.

Tip 4: The “mental trigger point” after the 1200m mark
When 300m remains, tell yourself, “Every remaining lap must be faster than the last,” establishing a rhythm of progressive acceleration.


Race Preparation Plan: 8-Week Training Focus for the 1500m

Weeks 1–3: Aerobic Base Consolidation

  • Focus on Z2, swimming 15,000–18,000m per week
  • 1 T-pace session per week (5×300m)

Weeks 4–6: Pace Adaptation

  • Introduce continuous 1000m race-pace swimming
  • Practice negative split pacing (first 500m conservative → last 500m faster)
  • 1 VO2max session per week (10×100m)

Weeks 7–8: Race Simulation

  • 1 full 1500m simulation swim per week (timed)

  2. Practice split awareness in training: Every time you do a long-distance session, record split times at 400m, 800m, and 1200m to develop a sense of rhythm where “feel matches the clock.”
  3. Avoid high-intensity training three days before the race: Allow the neuromuscular system to be fully prepared for maximum output on race day.
  4. Warm up thoroughly: Complete at least 600m of formal warm-up before the race, including 2–3 progressive swims, so the aerobic system is already at working capacity before the start.
