Wheel Accessories Buying Guide: Quick Release/Thru-Axle Adapters, Valve Extenders, Wheel Bags

After purchasing carbon wheels, you may need some accessories to complete the experience. From confirming thru-axle specifications, to valve extenders essential for deep-section carbon wheels, to wheel bags that protect your carbon investment—these “little things” are often overlooked but are extremely important.

Thru-Axles and Quick Release

Specification Confirmation

Modern road bikes come with various axle standards. Before purchasing wheels, you must confirm:

Standard Front Axle Rear Axle Common Bikes
Quick Release (QR) 100mm 130mm Older rim brake models
Thru-axle 12mm 12×100mm 12×142mm Modern disc brake bikes
Thru-axle 15mm 15×100mm 12×142mm Select models

Adapter Accessories

Some wheelsets offer adapter accessories to make the same wheels compatible with different standards:

Accessory Function Price (NT$)
QR to 12mm Adapter QR hub used on thru-axle frame Not possible (different standards)
12mm End Caps Compatibility with different brands’ 12mm thru-axles 500-1,000
Freehub Body Conversion HG to XDR or N3W 1,000-2,500

Important Note: Quick release hubs cannot be adapted for use on thru-axle frames (flange spacing differs), and vice versa. You must confirm your frame’s axle standard before purchasing.

DT Swiss End Cap System

For wheelsets using DT Swiss hubs, end caps can be easily swapped to fit different standards:

End Cap Model Compatible Standard
HWAXXX00S2977S 12×100mm front
HWAXXX00S3634S 12×142mm rear

End caps can be changed by hand without tools, which is a major advantage of DT Swiss hubs.

Valve Extenders

Why Are They Needed?

Deep-section carbon wheels (50mm and above) have rim depths that exceed standard valve lengths, preventing the valve head from protruding beyond the rim surface and making it impossible for a pump to engage properly. In this case, you need to use an extender or a longer valve.

Solutions

Option 1: Valve Extender

Type Description Price (NT$)
Thread-on Extender Screws onto a standard valve 150-300/piece
Press-in Extender Requires removing the original valve core 200-400/piece

Thread-on: No need to remove the valve core; simply screw it on. However, the connection point may have minor air leaks, and it adds extra height.

Press-in: Requires removing the original valve core first, then installing the extender and a new valve core. Better sealing, but slightly more complex to install.

Option 2: Extended Tubeless Valves

Simply purchase tubeless valves in lengths matching your rim depth:

Rim Depth Recommended Valve Length
30-40mm 44mm
40-50mm 60mm
50-65mm 80mm
65mm+ 100mm

Extended tubeless valves offer the best sealing and require no additional extenders. Recommended brands include Stan’s NoTubes and DT Swiss original valves.

Valve Materials

Material Weight Durability Price
Brass alloy Heavy Excellent Low
Aluminum alloy Light Good Medium
Carbon fiber Extremely light Fair High

Aluminum alloy valves offer the best value for money. Carbon fiber valves are extremely light (saving approximately 5g per valve) but are expensive and prone to damage.

Wheel Bags and Wheel Cases

Why Are They Needed?

Carbon wheels are precision, expensive equipment that requires proper protection during transport and storage. A good wheel bag/case can:

  • Prevent impacts and scratches
  • Protect rotors from being touched
  • Make carrying and storage convenient
  • Extend the lifespan of carbon wheels

Wheel Bags

Type Protection Level Portability Price (NT$)
Basic fabric bag Low Excellent 300-600
Padded soft bag Medium Good 800-1,500
Semi-rigid case Medium-high Fair 1,500-3,000

Recommended brands:

  • Scicon: Italian brand, best quality but most expensive
  • EVOC: German brand, good value
  • Generic brands: Many budget options available on Taobao or Shopee

Wheel Cases

Type Protection Level Portability Price (NT$)
Hard shell single-wheel case Extremely high Poor 3,000-6,000
Hard shell double-wheel case Extremely high Poor 5,000-10,000

Wheel cases are suitable for airline check-in or long-distance shipping. For everyday use, a wheel bag is sufficient.

Buying Recommendations

Use Case Recommendation
Carrying a spare wheel on the bike Basic fabric bag
Transporting in a car Padded soft bag
High-speed rail/train Semi-rigid case
Airline check-in Hard shell case
Home storage Basic fabric bag

Disc Brake Pad Spacers

Essential accessories to prevent brake pads from closing when the wheel is removed.

Type Price (NT$) Description
Brand original 100-200 Included with Shimano, SRAM products
Universal 50-100 Plastic or aluminum
DIY 0 Use thick cardboard or a business card as a substitute (emergency)

Recommendation: Prepare at least 2, one for the front and one for the rear. Develop the habit of inserting them whenever you remove a wheel.

Spare Rotors

If you have two sets of wheels, each set needs rotors installed. Rotor specifications must match your calipers.

Rotor Specification Compatible Position
160mm Front and rear (most common on road bikes)
140mm Rear wheel (select models)
Center Lock Shimano systems
6-bolt SRAM and select brands

Maintenance Tools

Basic Wheel Maintenance Tools

Tool Purpose Price (NT$)
Spoke wrench Adjusting spoke tension 300-500
Tensiometer Measuring spoke tension 3,000-5,000
Valve core tool Removing/installing valve cores 50-100
Rotor truing tool Straightening bent rotors 300-500
Thru-axle wrench Installing/removing thru-axles Included in standard hex key sets

Advanced Tools

Tool Purpose Price (NT$)

Total accessory budget 4,100-7,900

Conclusion

Carbon wheel accessories may seem like small details, but choosing the right accessories can make your carbon wheel experience better, more convenient, and safer. Extended valves are essential for deep-section carbon wheels, brake pad spacers are a safety necessity for disc brake wheelsets, and wheel bags are basic insurance for protecting your carbon wheel investment. When purchasing carbon wheels, remember to include the cost of these accessories in your budget planning. A set of NT$50,000 carbon wheels paired with NT$5,000-8,000 worth of peripheral accessories constitutes a complete carbon wheel upgrade package.
