- Think of it like water flow: V-shaped tread is designed to channel water away from the contact patch
- When the tip points forward, water is directed out to both sides
Arrow-shaped tread:
- Same as V-shaped: the arrow points in the direction of travel
Asymmetric tread:
- One side of the tread is denser, the other more sparse
- The denser side usually faces outward (but check the brand’s instructions)
Method 3: The Touch Test
Run your finger along the tread from front to back:
- Correct direction: your finger moves smoothly
- Wrong direction: your finger meets resistance, like petting a shark backwards
This method isn’t very precise — it’s still best to check the sidewall markings.

Correct Steps for Mounting a Tire
Step 1: Confirm the Direction
- Locate the direction marking on the tire’s sidewall

- Make a mark (with chalk, or remember the position of the brand logo)

Tubed system:
- Seat one bead into the rim first
- Insert a slightly inflated inner tube
- Use a tire lever to seat the other bead
- Confirm the inner tube isn’t pinched between the bead and the rim
- Inflate to the appropriate pressure
- Double-check the direction is correct
Tubeless system:
- Confirm the rim tape is intact
- Install the valve stem
- Seat one bead into the rim

- Use an air compressor or tubeless inflator to seat the beads
- Confirm the direction is correct
Step 3: Final Check
Final inspection after mounting:
- Spin the wheel and check that the tire sits evenly (no bulges)
- Viewed from the side, check that the tire is centered
- Double-check that the direction marking matches the rolling direction
- Confirm the tire pressure is correct
Special Cases
Different Front and Rear Directions
Some mountain bike tires are designed with different mounting directions for the front and rear wheel:
- Front wheel: Tread optimized for steering and lateral grip
- Rear wheel: Tread optimized for driving and braking
This design is usually indicated on the sidewall with “FRONT” or “REAR” along with the respective direction arrow.
Tire Rotation (Swapping Front and Rear)
Some riders periodically swap their front and rear tires to even out wear:
- The rear tire usually wears faster than the front (drive force plus most of the braking force)

- If the front and rear tires have different directions, they cannot be swapped
Brand Logo Orientation
Many riders follow an unwritten rule:
- The brand logo on the tire should be readable from the drivetrain side (right side)
- This is purely an aesthetic consideration and has nothing to do with performance
- But it does make the bike look more polished in photos
