Shimano Cassette Lockring Specifications: The Complete Guide
Introduction: Why Are There So Many Types?
Think there’s only one type of cassette lockring? Think again. Shimano’s cassette systems range from 8-speed to 12-speed, from road bikes to mountain bikes, and from HG (Hyperglide) to MS (Micro Spline). There are actually several different lockring specifications.
Use the wrong tool and you can’t get it off; mix up the specs and the cassette won’t fit. This article lays out all Shimano cassette lockring specifications in one clear reference.
The Evolution of Shimano Cassette Systems
Freehub Body Types
| Type | Full Name | Speeds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HG | Hyperglide | 8-11 speed | Most widely used |
| MS | Micro Spline | 12 speed | Shimano’s new standard |
Why Did the New Standard Appear?
The smallest cog on a 12-speed cassette is smaller than on 11-speed, and the traditional HG freehub body diameter can’t accommodate such a small cog. So Shimano designed the smaller-diameter Micro Spline freehub body.

Cassette Removal and Installation Guide
Removing the Cassette
- Remove the rear wheel
- Install the lockring tool: Insert the appropriate lockring tool into the lockring
- Install the chain whip: Wrap it around the middle cogs of the cassette
- Direction: Hold the chain whip in the drive direction (to prevent the cassette from rotating)
- Turn: Rotate the lockring tool counterclockwise
- Once the lockring is loose: Unscrew it by hand
- Remove the cassette: Take off each cog and spacer in order
Important: Remember the order of each cog and spacer when removing the cassette! Taking a photo is the best method.
Installing the Cassette
- Confirm the freehub body type: HG or MS
- Clean the freehub body surface
- Apply a thin layer of grease: On the splines of the freehub body
- Install the cogs in the correct order:
- Align the grooves on the cogs with the splines on the freehub body
- The HG system has one narrower spline as a locating feature
- The MS system also has an alignment design
- Place the lockring on
- Tighten by hand
- Torque to the recommended spec with the lockring tool:
- HG: 30-50 Nm
- MS: 40 Nm
Important Notes
- No chain whip is needed for installation (tightening direction matches the pedaling direction)
- Do not overtighten the lockring (especially on aluminum freehub bodies)
- If the lockring won’t thread on, verify the cassette cog order is correct
- Cassettes of different speeds cannot be installed on the wrong freehub body
Compatibility Notes
HG Cassette Compatibility
| Freehub Body | Compatible Cassettes |
|---|---|
| HG (Shimano) | Shimano 8-11 speed, SRAM 8-11 speed, KMC, etc. |
| HG (SRAM XD) | Incompatible, requires XD driver body |
| HG (Campagnolo) | Incompatible, different splines |
MS Cassette Compatibility
| Freehub Body | Compatible Cassettes |
|---|---|
| MS (Shimano) | Shimano 12-speed only |
| MS (other brands) | Some licensed brands |
Common Mix-Ups
| Situation | Result | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| 12-speed cassette on HG freehub body | Won’t fit | Requires MS freehub body |
| 11-speed cassette on MS freehub body | Won’t fit | Requires HG freehub body |
| Using TL-LR15 on MS lockring | Wrong tool | Use TL-LR11 |
| Using TL-LR11 on HG lockring | Wrong tool | Use TL-LR15 |
Buying Advice for Taiwanese Riders
- Bike shops usually have lockring tools: If you’re unsure about the spec, bring your wheel in
- Third-party tools work fine: Brands like Park Tool and Unior offer excellent quality
- Buy all your tools at once: TL-LR15 + TL-LR11 + chain whip, and you’ll be able to remove anything in the future
- Lockrings are reusable: But replace them if they show any damage
- The 12-speed era is here: If you plan to upgrade to 12-speed, buying the MS tool sooner saves you hassle later
Conclusion
Shimano’s cassette lockring specifications may seem complicated, but you only need to remember two key points: HG uses the TL-LR15, and MS uses the TL-LR11. Master this principle, add a chain whip and the correct torque values, and you’ll be able to handle all cassette removal and installation work yourself.
Replacing your own cassette not only saves you the shop’s labor costs, but also gives you a deeper understanding of your drivetrain. Next time the chain and cassette need replacing together, you can do it yourself.
