Lifestyle Management During the Recovery Week

The benefits of a recovery week come not only from reduced training volume—lifestyle habits matter just as much:

  • Add 30–60 minutes of sleep: Sleep should be more abundant than usual during a recovery week; go to bed 30 minutes earlier
  • Don’t drastically cut food intake: Reduced training volume doesn’t mean you need to eat much less; the body still needs adequate protein and carbohydrates for repair
  • Light activity instead of complete stillness: On rest days, do yoga, stretching, or walking to maintain blood circulation and speed up recovery
  • Massage or foam rolling: A recovery week is the best time for deep muscle relaxation work

How Do You Know Your Recovery Week Was Enough?

The best indicators of a successful recovery week:

  • Morning resting heart rate: By the end of the recovery week, morning heart rate should be 3–5 bpm lower than the highest value during the high-volume weeks
  • Training performance: In the first high-intensity session after the recovery week, pace or power should be slightly better than before the recovery week
  • Subjective feeling: By the end of the recovery week, you should feel “eager to go,” full of energy for the next training block

If you still feel fatigued after the recovery week, you may need to extend the deload or check whether your sleep and nutrition are sufficient.
