- Training pace = SR 35 spm
Once proficient, you can estimate your current speed just by feeling your stroke rate.
Method 4: 200-Meter Even-Pace Training
Goal: Swim 200 meters with no more than 2 seconds of difference between each 50-meter split. Without looking at the clock, swim at an even pace using pace awareness, then check each split afterward. This drill trains the ability to “maintain pace,” not “initiate pace.”
Breathing Rate as a Pace Indicator
Breathing rate (breaths per minute) is a reliable proxy indicator for pace awareness. Establish breathing patterns corresponding to each pace:
- Slow swimming: Breathe every 5 strokes (low SR, low breathing demand)
- Moderate pace: Breathe every 3 strokes (standard bilateral breathing)
- Race pace: Breathe every 2 strokes
- Sprint: Breathe every stroke or maintain breathing
When you feel like “breathing is starting to lag” during a swim, it usually means your pace has exceeded the target, and you should slow down accordingly.
Practical Advice
- Get a waterproof sports watch with lap-counting functionality (such as Garmin Swim 2, Apple Watch Ultra), and record time and subjective effort ratings immediately after each repeat
- In your swim training log, record “target pace vs. actual pace” to track the improvement curve of your pace awareness accuracy
- In pre-race swim training for triathlons, deliberately swim 400–600 meters continuously at race pace to establish a pace awareness baseline for race day
- Compete in swimming events across Taiwan (such as the amateur division of the National Social Swimming Championships, or county/city swimming festivals)—real competition is the best training ground for pace awareness
