However, many swimmers who perform well in pool training find themselves struggling with pacing chaos, loss of direction, and psychological panic once they hit open water.

This is not an ability issue, but an environmental adaptation issue. The physiological, psychological, and technical challenges of the pool and open water are vastly different; understanding these differences allows you to target your pool training to address the gaps.

Every 6–10 strokes, you need to lift your head to check your direction. Each sighting disrupts your rhythm and consumes extra energy. Research shows that each sighting reduces speed by approximately 2–4%, and sighting once per minute accumulates significant energy expenditure.

Challenge 2: Crowd Collisions and Start Chaos
At the start of an open water event, the crowd is dense, and collisions, kicking, and surface turbulence test your psychological stability.

Challenge 3: Adapting to Currents and Waves
Unlike the still water of a pool, the currents and wave conditions in open water require swimmers to constantly adjust their stroke angle and rhythm.

Challenge 4: Managing Propulsion Without Turns
In the pool, you get a push-off boost every 25m; in open water, a 1500m swim has no turns at all—stroke efficiency demands are much higher.


Five Training Methods to Simulate Open Water in the Pool

Method 1: Sighting Practice (Integrated into Regular Workouts)
Every 8 strokes, insert one “dolphin kick sighting” (using a butterfly kick while lifting your head to look forward) without stopping, practicing minimizing the impact of sighting on your pace.
Recommended frequency: 4–6 × 100m with sighting practice per workout.

Method 2: No-Turn Long-Distance Simulation
In a 50m pool, choose the lane closest to the wall and turn with a “light touch, no push-off” to simulate continuous swimming without push-offs in open water. Beginners can start with 500m and gradually increase to 2000m.

Method 3: Crowded Start Simulation
Find 2–3 training partners and start simultaneously from the end of the lane (rather than staggered starts) to practice maintaining a normal stroke rhythm amid collisions and splashing.

Method 4: Training in a Wetsuit
If you plan to compete in a wetsuit-required open water event (such as Taiwan’s winter sea swimming events), you should train in a wetsuit in the pool in advance to adapt to the altered buoyancy and stroke feel.

Method 5: Negative Split Pacing Training
The best strategy for open water racing is “swimming the second half faster than the first half” (negative split). Workout: 1000m + 1000m, with the second 1000m 15–30 seconds faster than the first, developing a “swim faster as you go” pacing strategy.


Taiwan Open Water Race Preparation Plan (Using Sun Moon Lake Crossing as an Example)

The Sun Moon Lake crossing is approximately 3000m. Here are the key pool training focuses for the 8 weeks leading up to the event:

  • Weeks 1–3: Add 200m of sighting swimming to each session to familiarize yourself with the technique
  • Weeks 4–5: Begin no-turn long-distance simulations (2000m × 1) to assess energy distribution
  • Weeks 6–7: Simulate race pace with a 3000m long-distance simulation (including sighting), recording times
  • Week 8 (Race Week): Cut training volume in half, focusing on easy swimming + technique sessions

Practical Tips

  • Scout the Race Venue in Advance: If you can visit Sun Moon Lake, Penghu, or other venues for 1–2 practice swims before the race, the benefit far exceeds pool simulation
  • Train in What You Race In: If you’ll wear a wetsuit for the race, complete at least 3–4 full training sessions in the wetsuit
  • Mental Preparation: Open water events in Taiwan often have very crowded starts; consider starting on the outside to avoid the densest crowds
  • Nutrition Strategy: Long-distance open water swims (over 2500m) may require energy gels, but the Sun Moon Lake course takes no more than 60 minutes, so fueling is usually unnecessary
