Introduction

At the moment the starting gun fires at road races across Taiwan, what’s the most common scene? Almost everyone sprints—even marathoners running 42 km.

This “Start Line Euphoria” phenomenon has been extensively documented in research and is one of the primary factors behind late-race collapses in marathons. A study from the University of Bath in the UK analyzed over 35,000 marathon finish records and found that: runners who ran the first 10% of the distance more than 5% too fast averaged 9.7% slower in the second half, with finish times far worse than those using an even-pace strategy.

Why Starting Too Fast Leads to a Late-Race Collapse

1. Accumulation of Oxygen Deficit

When exercise begins, the cardiorespiratory system needs 2–3 minutes to reach a steady-state aerobic energy supply. During this “oxygen lag phase,” if you run too fast, your body must tap into the anaerobic system to cover the energy gap, rapidly accumulating oxygen debt and lactate.

Once you incur oxygen debt early on, your body must “pay it back” later—in the form of fatigue and slowing pace.

2. Premature Glycogen Depletion

The biggest challenge of a full marathon is “hitting the wall,” which is essentially muscle glycogen depletion. Starting too fast raises the burn rate by 10–15%, causing glycogen to run out at 30–32 km instead of 35–38 km, resulting in a severe late-race collapse.

3. Earlier Onset of Neural Fatigue

Running at high speed places far greater demands on the central nervous system than steady-paced running. Early accumulation of neural fatigue rapidly depletes your “willpower reserves” for the later stages, making it difficult to maintain proper running form and cadence when tired.


Start-Line Challenges at Taiwanese Races

In Taiwan’s road races, the starting segment presents these additional challenges:

  • Chaotic corrals: Some races don’t enforce corral assignments strictly, forcing faster runners to weave around others, or slower runners to occupy the front rows and create congestion
  • Downhill starts: The Taipei Marathon, for example, has a slight downhill at the start, causing runners to go too fast without realizing it
  • Group-running effect: The pace of runners around you unconsciously pulls you faster

Coping strategies:

  • Before the start, write “First 4 km pace: X:XX” on your wrist or the back of your hand as a reminder
  • Set a “pace alert” on your GPS watch to vibrate automatically if you go 5 seconds too fast
  • Set a clear early-race rhythm goal before starting; after the gun, only look at your watch, not at the people around you

The Correct Way to Distribute Your Starting Pace

Using a 3:45 marathon goal (average 5:20/km) as an example, here’s the recommended pace distribution:

  • First 4.2 km (first 10%): 5:28–5:32/km (8–12 seconds slower than target)
  • 4.2–25 km (core segment): 5:18–5:22/km (close to target pace)
  • 25–35 km (steady segment): 5:20–5:25/km (feeling heavy; maintain rhythm)
  • 35–42 km (finish segment): 5:15–5:20/km (gradually accelerate if you have energy left)

This “negative split” or “slightly slower start” strategy is the approach commonly used by elite runners in the World Marathon Majors.


Practical Advice

  • Practice start restraint: During long runs, deliberately hold a pace slower than planned for the first 5–10 minutes to build the habit of suppressing the urge to “blast off”
  • Temperature factor: Taiwan’s November–December races feature cool weather, making start-line euphoria more likely; in contrast, summer heat naturally suppresses an overly fast start
  • Pacer strategy: If you’re running a race with pacers (such as the Taipei Marathon pace team), following a pacer is the most brain-efficient starting strategy

Conclusion

Those 30 seconds at the starting line determine how you feel in the final 30 minutes. Every time you watch others pass you and choose to hold your pace, you’re storing energy for the finish-line sprint. Start slower, finish much faster—this isn’t backing down; it’s the wisdom of a strategist.
