Road Running Start Strategy: The Impact of Pacing Control in the First 10% of Distance on Finish Time

Introduction
At the moment the starting gun fires at road races across Taiwan, what’s the most common scene? Almost everyone sprints—even marathoners running 42 km.
This “Start Line Euphoria” phenomenon has been extensively documented in research and is one of the primary factors behind late-race collapses in marathons. - First 4.2 km (first 10%): 5:28–5:32/km (8–12 seconds slower than target)
- 4.2–25 km (core segment): 5:18–5:22/km (close to target pace)
- 25–35 km (steady segment): 5:20–5:25/km (feeling heavy; maintain rhythm)
- 35–42 km (finish segment): 5:15–5:20/km (gradually accelerate if you have energy left)
This “negative split” or “slightly slower start” strategy is the approach commonly used by elite runners in the World Marathon Majors.
Practical Advice
- Practice start restraint: During long runs, deliberately hold a pace slower than planned for the first 5–10 minutes to build the habit of suppressing the urge to “blast off”
- Temperature factor: Taiwan’s November–December races feature cool weather, making start-line euphoria more likely; in contrast, summer heat naturally suppresses an overly fast start
- Pacer strategy: If you’re running a race with pacers (such as the Taipei Marathon pace team), following a pacer is the most brain-efficient starting strategy
