Summer in Taiwan is a brutal test for runners. From June to September, temperatures in Taiwan routinely hit 33–36°C, and humidity often exceeds 80%. Every year, runners find themselves wondering during this season: “Last winter I could run 5:30/km, so why is my heart rate spiking to 175 at the same pace now?”

You haven’t regressed—this is the systematic impact of hot environments on running performance. Understanding the science behind this effect and learning how to adjust your pace correctly will help you maintain training quality during the hot season while protecting your health.


How Heat Affects Running Performance

When ambient temperature rises, the body faces the following physiological challenges:

Practical Strategies for Summer Running in Taiwan

1. Switch from Pace Control to Heart Rate Control

The most scientific approach to summer training is “ditch the pace, watch the heart rate”:

  • Easy runs: keep heart rate at 70–75% of max heart rate
  • Tempo training: keep heart rate at 82–87% of max heart rate
  • High-intensity intervals: heart rate reaches 90–95% of max heart rate

No matter how hot it is outside, as long as your heart rate stays in the corresponding zone, you’re giving your body the right training stimulus.

2. Priority Order for Time-of-Day Selection

  • Best: 5:00–6:30 AM (around sunrise, lowest temperature)
  • Acceptable: 7:00–8:30 PM (after sunset, but humidity remains high)
  • Avoid: 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
  • Alternative: indoor treadmill—trade ground feel for safety

3. Adjusting Hydration and Electrolyte Strategy

  • Drink 300–400ml of water 30 minutes before training
  • Drink 150–200ml every 20 minutes (1.5 times the water intake of cool weather in summer)
  • For runs over 60 minutes, use sports drinks containing electrolytes
  • Consume sodium-rich foods after running to avoid hyponatremia

Heat Stroke Prevention in Hot Weather Training

You must stop running immediately if any of the following symptoms appear:

  • Stopped sweating (skin becomes dry and hot)
  • Heart rate suddenly spikes or drops abnormally
  • Dizziness, nausea, confusion
  • Blurred vision or black spots in your field of vision

Taiwan trail runners, take special note: when running in low-altitude mountain areas (such as Yangmingshan or Shoushan), the heat accumulation effect is more pronounced on uphill sections, so you must slow down earlier.


Practical Advice

  • Summer training is an investment: Although your pace is slower in summer, your cardiovascular system is still receiving high-intensity stimulus. When winter race season arrives, your body will have completed its adaptation, and your pace will naturally return
  • Adjust how you compare: Don’t compare summer training paces with winter PBs. Instead, use heart rate efficiency (heart rate/pace ratio) to evaluate training quality
  • Heat acclimatization training: Scientifically, consistently running in hot environments for 10–14 days triggers the body’s “heat acclimatization” mechanism, including earlier onset of sweating and increased plasma volume. These adaptations will help you perform better in your next cool-weather race
