Continental GP5000 S TR In-Depth Review: The Latest Evolution of the Road Tire King

The Continental Grand Prix 5000 series has long sat at the top of the road tire rankings, and the GP5000 S TR, the newest addition to the lineup, blends tubeless-ready technology with the brand’s top-tier rubber compound. This review takes a close look at the tire many call the “king of road tires.”

BlackChili Compound: Continental’s Core Technology

BlackChili is Continental’s proprietary rubber compound, built around a special carbon-black particle structure. Compared with conventional rubber, BlackChili uses finer, more evenly distributed carbon-black particles, delivering three key advantages:

  • Lower rolling resistance: According to independent testing by Bicycle Rolling Resistance, the GP5000 S TR posts a rolling resistance of only about 11.2W at 28C / 6.0 bar, placing it among the best in its class
  • Better grip: The fine carbon-black particles increase the contact area between rubber and road surface, noticeably shortening wet braking distances
  • Longer service life: BlackChili’s wear resistance outperforms the race-grade compounds used by most competitors

The Evolution from GP5000 to GP5000 S TR

Compared with its predecessor, the GP5000 TL, the GP5000 S TR brings the following improvements:

  1. Lighter weight: The 28C version drops from roughly 300g to about 285g, a reduction of around 5%
  2. Improved bead design: A new Hookless Compatible bead structure works with both hooked and hookless rims
  3. Better TLR air retention: A more uniform inner sealant coating means less sealant is needed after installation
  4. Lazer Grip technology: Laser-cut micro grooves added to both sides of the tread improve cornering grip

Real-World Ride Impressions

Rolling Efficiency

In flat-road cruising tests, the GP5000 S TR 28C set up tubeless showed almost no perceptible difference in rolling resistance compared with the same brand’s GP5000 tubular. On the asphalt roads common in Taiwan, this tire delivers very direct road feel, with excellent power transfer.

Grip and Cornering

In real-world testing on winding roads such as Taiwan’s North Coast and Yangjin Highway, the GP5000 S TR inspires strong confidence through corners. Even leaning into turns on slightly damp pavement, the tread continued to provide stable grip. The Lazer Grip micro-grooves make a real, noticeable difference in practice, especially in terms of stability during high-speed cornering.

Puncture Resistance

The Vectran Breaker puncture-protection layer performed admirably in Taiwan’s road conditions. Over a three-month test period (roughly 3,000 km), only one minor puncture occurred, and the sealant successfully sealed it automatically.

Ease of Installation

Compared with the notoriously difficult installation of the previous-generation GP5000 TL, the GP5000 S TR is significantly easier to mount. A standard tubeless tire lever together with a floor pump is enough to seat the bead — a CO2 inflator isn’t strictly necessary. That said, it’s still a good idea to keep an inflator cartridge on hand for the first installation.

Size Selection Guide

Use Case Recommended Size Reason
Racing / Time Trial 25C-28C Prioritizes low rolling resistance and light weight
General Training 28C Best balance of comfort and efficiency
Long-Distance Riding 28C-30C Lower pressure improves comfort
Mixed Surface Riding 30C-32C Extra margin for gravel sections

For Taiwan’s road conditions, 28C is the most recommended all-around size. Paired with a rim with an internal width of 21mm or more, the actual installed width comes to roughly 29-30mm, balancing efficiency and comfort.

Pressure Reference Chart

Recommended tubeless pressures (28C):

Rider Weight Front Rear
55-65 kg 4.8 bar 5.2 bar
65-75 kg 5.2 bar 5.7 bar
75-85 kg 5.5 bar 6.0 bar
85-95 kg 5.8 bar 6.3 bar

Overall Rating

  • Rolling resistance: ★★★★★ (5/5)
  • Grip: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)
  • Durability: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
  • Ease of installation: ★★★★☆ (3.5/5)
  • Value for money: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

The GP5000 S TR truly lives up to its reputation as the “king of road tires.” It strikes an excellent balance between rolling resistance, grip, and durability. If you’re only going to buy one road tire, the GP5000 S TR 28C is very unlikely to disappoint. Its only real drawback is the relatively high price, but given its all-around performance and durability, the long-term value is actually quite outstanding.
