Introduction

Wuling (Wuling, elevation 3,275 meters) is the holy grail of road cycling in Taiwan, and the ultimate proving ground for climbing power pacing. The full route starts from Puli (Puli), covering roughly 90 km with over 3,000 meters of elevation gain. Average ride times range from 6-9 hours for amateur riders to 4-5 hours for elite competitors.

For riders with a power meter, the most common question is: should I pace off my power numbers or my heart rate numbers? There’s no absolute answer, but understanding how each strategy works will help you make smarter decisions on the road to Wuling.

Steady Watts (Power-Based Pacing)

Principle

Power is an instantaneous, objective output metric, unaffected by temperature, altitude, or emotion. Once you set a target power, you maintain the same output intensity regardless of how the gradient changes.

Advantages

  • Precise and quantifiable: Completely eliminates interference from subjective perception
  • Predictable finish time: Knowing the relationship between power and W/kg lets you estimate split times
  • Prevents overcooking: Avoids burning through your W’bal at the base of the climb

Disadvantages

  • Ignores physiological changes: The same 250W places a completely different physiological burden at 1,000 meters versus 3,000 meters of altitude
  • Insufficient high-altitude compensation: On the Hehuanshan (Hehuanshan) section of Wuling (2,500-3,275m), the thin air demands more from your heart and lungs at the same power output

Steady Heart Rate (Heart Rate-Based Pacing)

Principle

Heart rate reflects the body’s “overall load” during exercise, encompassing oxygen delivery, lactate metabolism, thermoregulation, and other physiological factors. Pacing by steady heart rate allows you to respond more naturally to the physiological stress brought on by high altitude.

Advantages

  • Automatic altitude compensation: At high altitude, the same heart rate corresponds to lower power, and the body adjusts naturally
  • Thermoregulation: When temperatures rise (afternoons in Qingjing), heart rate helps you avoid overheating
  • Perceived comfort: Easier to use for riders without a power meter, or those tackling Wuling for the first time

Disadvantages

  • Heart rate lag: After a brief surge, heart rate takes 30-60 seconds to catch up, making it easy to overshoot on steep sections
  • Emotional interference: Race atmosphere and crowds at aid stations can elevate heart rate
  • Morning vs. afternoon differences: At the same perceived effort, morning heart rate is typically 5-10 bpm lower

Combining the Two Strategies

In practice, the strongest Wuling climbers typically adopt a hybrid strategy — power as the primary metric, heart rate as a secondary check:

Rule One: Early Section (Puli → Wushe)

  • Use power as the primary metric, ensuring you don’t exceed the upper Sweet Spot limit (93% FTP)
  • If heart rate is unusually high (>80% HRmax), proactively reduce power

Rule Two: Middle Section (Wushe → Qingjing)

  • Maintain your set power while monitoring the heart rate trend
  • If heart rate keeps rising (decoupling), you’re already overreaching and should reduce power by 5-8%

Rule Three: High-Altitude Section (Hehuanshan → Wuling)

  • Switch to heart rate-led pacing: maintain 75-80% HRmax and let your body naturally adapt to the thin air
  • At this point the power number matters less — cardiopulmonary load is the key factor

Practical Recommendations

  1. Pre-race simulation: Do at least one full Wuling summit attempt at least 6 weeks before race day, recording power and heart rate curves for the entire route
  2. W/kg assessment: For the full Wuling route, aim for a W/kg setting at 55-65% of your personal best 1-hour power (affected by high altitude)
  3. Fueling strategy: Consume 60-80g of carbohydrates per hour to maintain glycogen stores
  4. The day before high altitude: Stay overnight in Qingjing to let your red blood cell count begin to rise
  5. Power meter calibration: Re-zero your power meter in cold conditions before departure (high-mountain temperatures can drop below 10°C)

Conclusion

Wuling is not just a test of fitness — it’s a contest of strategy and judgment. Whether you choose steady watts or steady heart rate, the key is to avoid overreaching and avoid panic — so that you still have something left for the final 10 km, rather than being completely spent by the time you reach Hehuanshan pass. Your power meter is your best coach on Wuling, but your brain is the final decision-maker.
