- Emotional interference: Race atmosphere and crowds at aid stations can elevate heart rate
- Morning vs. afternoon differences: At the same perceived effort, morning heart rate is typically 5-10 bpm lower
Combining the Two Strategies
In practice, the strongest Wuling climbers typically adopt a hybrid strategy — power as the primary metric, heart rate as a secondary check:
Rule One: Early Section (Puli → Wushe)
- Use power as the primary metric, ensuring you don’t exceed the upper Sweet Spot limit (93% FTP)
- If heart rate is unusually high (>80% HRmax), proactively reduce power
Rule Two: Middle Section (Wushe → Qingjing)
- Maintain your set power while monitoring the heart rate trend
- If heart rate keeps rising (decoupling), you’re already overreaching and should reduce power by 5-8%
Rule Three: High-Altitude Section (Hehuanshan → Wuling)

- Fueling strategy: Consume 60-80g of carbohydrates per hour to maintain glycogen stores
- The day before high altitude: Stay overnight in Qingjing to let your red blood cell count begin to rise
- Power meter calibration: Re-zero your power meter in cold conditions before departure (high-mountain temperatures can drop below 10°C)
