Unlike the “absolute power” comparisons used for professional riders, W/kg places riders of different weights on a relatively fair comparison basis. Common W/kg Myths in Taiwan

Myth One: “Buying a lighter bike is more effective than training”

The benefit of reducing bike weight from 7.5kg to 6.5kg, calculated in terms of climbing speed, is roughly equivalent to a 0.03 W/kg improvement. In comparison, 6 months of serious training typically yields a 0.3–0.5 W/kg improvement. Train first, then consider weight reduction.

Myth Two: “Higher W/kg is more useful in Taiwan”

W/kg has the greatest impact on climbing, but flat-road cruising is more influenced by aerodynamic drag (i.e., frontal area). Larger riders may have an advantage on flat roads.
