How to Read Your Weaknesses
Step 1: View your power curve on Strava or Intervals.icu
Both Strava (Premium) and Intervals.icu (free) offer power curve features. Import at least 3 months of ride data, and the system will automatically generate your personalized curve.
Step 2: Compare “relative power” (W/kg)
Compare your power curve against the standard curve for your target level (e.g., Cat 3 = 3.5–4.0 W/kg) to identify which duration’s W/kg is most “behind.”
Step 3: Identify your main weak zones
- Low at 1–10 seconds: insufficient neuromuscular power (anaerobic sprint)
- Low at 1–5 minutes: insufficient VO2max power
- Low at 5–20 minutes: weak threshold ability (most impactful for climbing races)
- Low at 30–60 minutes: insufficient FTP / endurance base

- 1–2 sessions per week of 5×5-minute intervals (110–115% FTP)
- 5-minute Z1 recovery between intervals
- Continue for 6–8 weeks

- Focus on strengthening one weakness per quarter: Spreading your efforts across multiple weaknesses is less effective
- Don’t over-chase “balance”: Depending on your race goals, weaknesses in certain durations may be acceptable
