Power Curve Interpretation: Find Your Weak Zones

Introduction

You may know your FTP and your fastest time up Wuling, but do you know your 5-second maximum sprint power? Or your 5-minute and 30-minute maximum power? The power curve (Mean Maximal Power Curve, MMP Curve) links these maximum power outputs across different durations into one continuous curve, letting you see your ability profile at a glance.

More importantly, the “dips” in your power curve are exactly where your training weaknesses lie. Design targeted workouts to address those weaknesses, and your overall competitive ability will improve significantly.

How the Power Curve Is Constructed

The power curve is plotted with “duration (X-axis) vs. maximum average power (Y-axis)”:

  • X-axis: from 1 second to 120 minutes (or even longer)
  • Y-axis: the highest power output ever recorded for the corresponding duration
  • Data source: all of your ride records (at least 3–6 months recommended)

What the curve shape means:

  • A “flatter” curve (small power differences across durations) → endurance-oriented rider
  • A “steeper” curve (short-duration power far higher than long-duration) → explosive rider

How to Read Your Weaknesses

Step 1: View your power curve on Strava or Intervals.icu

Both Strava (Premium) and Intervals.icu (free) offer power curve features. Import at least 3 months of ride data, and the system will automatically generate your personalized curve.

Step 2: Compare “relative power” (W/kg)

Compare your power curve against the standard curve for your target level (e.g., Cat 3 = 3.5–4.0 W/kg) to identify which duration’s W/kg is most “behind.”

Step 3: Identify your main weak zones

  • Low at 1–10 seconds: insufficient neuromuscular power (anaerobic sprint)
  • Low at 1–5 minutes: insufficient VO2max power
  • Low at 5–20 minutes: weak threshold ability (most impactful for climbing races)
  • Low at 30–60 minutes: insufficient FTP / endurance base

Targeted Workouts for Your Weaknesses

Weakness 1: Insufficient 1–5 Minute (VO2max) Power

Symptoms: Dropped on short climbs under 5 minutes (e.g., some steep sections on Yangjin Highway)

Targeted workouts:

  • 1–2 sessions per week of 5×5-minute intervals (110–115% FTP)
  • 5-minute Z1 recovery between intervals
  • Continue for 6–8 weeks

Weakness 2: Insufficient 5–20 Minute (Threshold-to-VO2max Transition Zone) Power

Symptoms: Can hold on short climbs but falls behind on long climbs (e.g., the various sections of Wuling)

Targeted workouts:

  • Sweet Spot + VO2max mixed workout
  • 2×15 minutes Sweet Spot + 2×5 minutes VO2max

Weakness 3: Insufficient 30–60 Minute (FTP Zone) Power

Symptoms: Noticeable pace drop in the latter part of long rides

Targeted workouts:

  • 2×20–30 minute threshold workouts
  • Increase total weekly Z2 training volume

Seasonal Tracking of Your Power Curve

It is recommended to screenshot and save your power curve once per season (every 3 months) to compare progress across each duration:

Practical Advice

  1. Accumulate data first: A power curve only becomes meaningful with 3–6 months of rich ride data
  2. Watch out for “test results vs. random riding”: High points on the power curve may come from race sprints rather than sustained ability
  3. Use Intervals.icu’s comparison feature: You can directly compare your curves from different periods
  4. Focus on strengthening one weakness per quarter: Spreading your efforts across multiple weaknesses is less effective
  5. Don’t over-chase “balance”: Depending on your race goals, weaknesses in certain durations may be acceptable
