This “easy swim” may seem limited in its effects, but it is actually an indispensable piece of the training cycle puzzle.

The Physiological Mechanism of Lactate Clearance

After intense swimming, the lactate accumulated in muscles is not a harmful substance; in fact, it can be reused as energy. The issue is that excessive lactate accumulation lowers muscle pH, reducing muscle contractile capacity and increasing fatigue.

Where lactate goes (after training):

  • Approximately 75% is re-oxidized into energy (in muscles, the heart, and the liver)
  • Approximately 20% is converted into glucose (gluconeogenesis)

In-Water Stretching: A Value-Added Tool for Recovery Swims

After a recovery swim, you can do 5–10 minutes of simple in-water stretching at the pool edge:

  • Shoulder rotation stretch: Hold the pool wall with both hands, slowly rotate the shoulders forward and backward, 10 rotations each way
  • Pectoralis major stretch: With your back to the pool wall, grip the edge with both hands and lean forward slowly for 30 seconds
  • Hip flexor stretch: In a lunge position in the water, stretch the hip flexor of the forward leg, 30 seconds per leg

  2. Don’t bring a workout plan into the water: Recovery swims are the most “free” training—just stay relaxed and don’t worry about distance or pace.
  3. Notes for Taiwan’s summer vacation period: Pools are packed in July–August, so schedule recovery swims during less crowded morning hours (06:00–07:30) to avoid being forced to speed up.
  4. Do recovery swims with friends: Inviting a swim buddy to swim easy and chat is a great way to control intensity (if you can talk, the intensity is low enough).
  5. Consume protein after a recovery swim: Although easy swimming is low intensity, it still provides mild muscle stimulation; consuming 20g of protein (soy milk, eggs, yogurt) within 30 minutes after swimming aids recovery.
