Introduction
Kinmen, a Taiwanese off-shore island located just a few kilometers from Xiamen, China, has become one of Taiwan’s most unique travel destinations due to its distinctive historical background. Once the front line of the standoff between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, this small island has now transformed into a tourist destination combining wartime relics, Southern Fujian (Minnan) architecture, and natural ecology. Cycling around Kinmen is not just a physical journey, but also a trip through time into Taiwan’s modern history. The island is not large—a full loop is about 70 kilometers—with gentle terrain and low cycling difficulty, yet it offers an unexpectedly rich experience.
Route Planning
The Kinmen loop route starts from Jincheng and can be ridden clockwise or counterclockwise. The following is planned in a clockwise direction:
| Section | Distance | Featured Attractions | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jincheng → Shamei | Approx. 15 km | Juguang Tower, Kinmen County Museum of History and Folklore | ★☆☆ |
| Shamei → Shanwai → Mashan | Approx. 10 km | Mashan Observation Station, Kinmen Bridge | ★☆☆ |
| Mashan → Lieyu (Little Kinmen) Ferry Terminal | Approx. 10 km | Taiwu Mountain Road | ★★☆ |
| Lieyu Loop | Approx. 10 km | Lienu Temple, Huxia Settlement | ★☆☆ |
| Return to Jincheng | Approx. 25 km | Zhaishan Tunnel, Oucuo Settlement | ★☆☆ |
If you do not cross the sea to Little Kinmen (Lieyu), the loop around Greater Kinmen Island is about 60 kilometers, easily completed in a single day.
Wartime Cultural Attractions
The charm of cycling in Kinmen lies in discovering a historical relic every few kilometers:
- Zhaishan Tunnel: A granite underground waterway carved out in the 1960s, used to secretly receive supply ships. Stretching 500 meters, the tunnel is cool and breezy inside, making it a refreshing escape from the heat and the most awe-inspiring wartime structure on the island.
- Mashan Observation Station: The closest observation point to Xiamen. On clear days, you can clearly see Xiamen’s high-rises with the naked eye—the most direct place to feel how close the two sides of the strait are geographically.
- Guningtou War Museum: A historical museum documenting the 1949 Battle of Guningtou in Kinmen. The tanks and landing ships parked outside are must-photograph landmarks.
- Bunkers and Artillery Positions: Dozens of well-preserved Cold War-era bunkers and artillery emplacements are scattered across the island. You will keep encountering these historical sites along the ride, filling the journey with a sense of history.
Southern Fujian Cultural Villages
Another soul of Kinmen lies in its well-preserved traditional Southern Fujian settlements:
- Shanhou Folk Culture Village: The best-preserved settlement of Qing Dynasty Southern Fujian grand houses (traditional large courtyard residences). Eighteen rows of connected old houses form a spectacular cluster of Southern Fujian architecture—the highest density of preserved traditional Southern Fujian buildings in Taiwan.
- Zhushan Settlement: Another well-preserved traditional settlement. At its center lies a beautiful pond surrounded by century-old houses, as tranquil as a hidden paradise.
- Jincheng Old Street: The Juguang Road area preserves the look of Kinmen’s early commercial streets, lined with old liquor shops (featuring kaoliang liquor) and peanut candy (gongtang) stores.
Kinmen Specialties and Supplies
While cycling in Kinmen, you absolutely cannot miss the local specialties:
- Kaoliang Liquor: Kinmen Kaoliang is Taiwan’s most famous white liquor brand. Enjoying a small glass after the ride is a local tradition.
- Gongtang (Peanut Candy): Kinmen’s crispy peanut gongtang is the island’s most iconic souvenir and can be purchased everywhere.
- Oyster Vermicelli: Kinmen is renowned for its abalone and local seafood, with several seafood restaurants in the Jincheng urban area.
- Bread Ovens: Some Kinmen settlements preserve traditional wood-fired bread ovens, and freshly baked bread is an unexpected cycling refueling stop.
Supply Point Distribution
- Jincheng urban area: Convenience stores, restaurants, and bento shops are all available—the main supply base
- Shamei: Convenience stores, snacks
- Shanwai: Convenience stores, casual dining
- Near Zhaishan Tunnel: Drink vending machines, small stalls
Bicycle Rental
Bicycle rental services are available near the Kinmen Airport exit and around Jincheng Bus Station, offering both standard bicycles and electric-assist bikes (highly recommended—Kinmen summers are hot, and e-bikes make the ride much more comfortable). Rental fees are reasonable and usually include a helmet.
Practical Tips
- Flight Connections: Direct flights to Kinmen are available from Taipei Songshan Airport as well as Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan, and elsewhere. Flight time is about 1 hour. You can bring a folding bike on the plane or rent one in Kinmen.
- Best Season: Spring and autumn (March–May, October–November) offer pleasant weather. Winter brings strong northeast monsoon winds that affect cycling, while summer is scorching hot.
- Days to Stay: It is recommended to allow at least two days—day one for the Greater Kinmen loop, and day two for crossing to Little Kinmen and exploring attractions in depth.
Conclusion
Cycling Kinmen is Taiwan’s most unique cycling experience. Pedaling past wartime shell craters, stopping to photograph century-old houses, and feeling the weight of Taiwan’s Cold War history inside Zhaishan Tunnel—these are cycling memories you will not find anywhere else in Taiwan. When you leave Kinmen, you take away a few boxes of gongtang, a bottle of kaoliang, and a precious journey through history.
