The Complete Guide to Road Bike Internal Cable Routing

Modern road bikes have almost universally adopted Internal Cable Routing, hiding cables and housing inside the frame tubes for a cleaner look and reduced aerodynamic drag. But internal routing also brings real maintenance challenges – replacing a brake or shift cable can turn from a 10-minute job into a 2-hour nightmare. This article covers the different internal routing designs, the tools you need, and practical threading techniques.

Types of Internal Routing Design

1. Semi-Internal Routing

Cables enter through a port on the outside of the frame, travel through the tube’s interior, and exit through another port.

Characteristics:

  • The frame has clearly defined entry and exit ports
  • Housing typically enters near the head tube area and exits at the bottom of the down tube or the BB area
  • Brake and shift lines use separate ports

Typical bikes: Most mid-to-high-end road bikes from 2015-2020

2. Full Internal Routing

Cables enter through an integrated cockpit at the head tube and run entirely inside the frame, including through the fork and every frame tube along the way.

Characteristics:

  • No visible cable from the handlebar all the way to the derailleur/brake caliper
  • Usually paired with an integrated head tube and cockpit
  • The most difficult routing to service

Typical bikes: Trek Madone SLR, Specialized Tarmac SL8, Cervelo S5

3. Magnetic Access-Panel System

The frame has a removable, magnetically-attached panel that opens to give direct access to the internal cables.

Characteristics:

  • You can open the panel to service the cables without having to fully de-route them
  • The panel is usually located at the bottom of the down tube or in the BB area
  • Widely considered the most service-friendly internal routing design

Typical bikes: Giant Propel (FluxTech), Pinarello Dogma F, Colnago V4Rs

4. Integrated Cockpit Systems

Handlebar, stem, and head tube form a single integrated cockpit, with all cable runs completed inside the cockpit assembly.

Characteristics:

  • The cleanest look and best aerodynamics
  • Swapping the cockpit or adjusting its angle usually requires re-routing the cables
  • Some brands use a proprietary cockpit design that only accepts OEM parts

Threading Tools

1. Magnetic Cable Router

How it works: One end is a magnetic guide tip attached to the cable, the other is an external magnet. You insert the guide tip into the frame at the entry port, then use the external magnet on the outside of the frame to walk the guide tip through to the exit port.

Tips:

  • The magnetic field has to penetrate the carbon tube wall – the thicker the wall, the weaker the effective pull
  • In the BB area, where the walls are thickest, you may need a stronger magnet
  • Flip the frame so gravity helps the guide tip drop into place

2. Flexible Fish Tape

How it works: A semi-rigid plastic rod (similar to a fish tape) is inserted at the entry port and worked by feel through the internal path until it reaches the exit port.

  • Frame-specific fish tapes: Many frames ship with one – always keep it when you buy a new bike

Tips:

  • The tip of the fish tape can usually be bent to a specific angle
  • At a fork in the path (for example, where the down tube splits toward the left and right chainstays), adjust the bend to steer the tool in the right direction
  • Push and rotate the tape at the same time – it passes through tight spots more easily

3. Pull-Through Method (Old Cable Pulls New Cable)

How it works: Before removing the old housing, tape the new housing to the tail end of the old one. As you pull the old housing out, the new housing gets pulled in behind it.

This is the simplest and most recommended method, as long as you still have the old cable in place to work with.

Steps:

  1. At the exit end of the old housing, firmly tape the new housing to the old housing with electrical tape
  2. Make sure the joint is smooth so it doesn’t snag on internal guides or bends inside the frame
  3. Slowly pull the old housing out from the entry end – the new housing will be drawn in behind it
  4. Pull with steady, even force – don’t yank

Note: This method doesn’t work for a first-time build (new bike assembly) or if the old housing has already been removed.

4. Compressed Air Method

How it works: Place a thin pull-string (leader line) at the entry port and blow compressed air through it – the airflow carries the string through to the exit port.

Best for: Frames where the internal path is relatively straight and unobstructed, with no internal blockages.

Tools needed: A bike pump’s air chuck, thin cotton string, tape

Practical Threading Techniques

Tip 1: Use Gravity to Your Advantage

Flip or tilt the frame so the direction you’re threading in lines up with gravity. For example, when threading from the head tube toward the BB, tilt the frame nose-up; when threading from the BB toward the rear derailleur, tilt it tail-down.

Tip 2: Leave a Pull-String Inside

Every time you replace housing, leave a thin string (dental floss or fishing line) inside the frame tube to make the next job easier. Tape the ends of the string down at the entry and exit ports.

Tip 3: Take Photos Before You Start

Before removing the old housing, photograph:

  • The entry and exit location of every line
  • The path each line takes inside the frame (some frames have a single entry port but an internal splitter)
  • The length of each housing segment (useful reference when cutting the new housing)

Tip 4: Use the Internal Guide Sleeves

Some frames have rubber sleeves or guide tubes inside the tubes. Make sure the cable passes through the inside of the sleeve, not between the sleeve and the tube wall. Missing this causes rattling noise and cable wear.

Tip 5: The Electronic Shifting Advantage

Di2 and AXS electronic shifting systems use wires (or no wires at all) that are much thinner and more flexible than mechanical shift housing, which makes threading dramatically easier. If you regularly service your own bike, this is a genuinely practical reason to consider electronic shifting.

The BB Area: Internal Routing’s Biggest Challenge

The Bottom Bracket area is the toughest spot for internal routing because:

  1. Multiple lines converge here: Front and rear brake lines and front and rear shift lines all meet in this area
  2. Very tight space: The interior of the BB shell has limited room
  3. Many bends: Cables have to turn from the down tube toward the chainstay or seat tube direction
  4. Thick walls: Magnetic routers are least effective in this area

Solutions:

  • Thread the hardest line first (usually the rear brake line, which has the longest and most winding path)
  • Some frames have a removable panel at the bottom of the BB – make use of it
  • If you truly can’t get a line through, consider removing the BB to open up working space

Post-Threading Checklist

  • [ ] Every cable follows the correct path with no crossing or tangling
  • [ ] Bends are smooth, with no sharp kinks
  • [ ] No noticeable resistance when pulling the brake lever
  • [ ] Shifting is smooth with no hesitation
  • [ ] No cable gets pulled or snagged when turning the handlebar
  • [ ] End caps are installed on all housing ends
  • [ ] No rattling noise inside the frame (shake the frame to confirm cables aren’t hitting the tube walls)

Reducing Internal Rattle

One of the most annoying issues with internal routing is “cable rattle” inside the frame while riding:

  1. Foam tape on the housing: Wrap a thin layer of foam tape around sections of housing that run through open, unsupported tube sections
  2. Rubber grommets: Use properly-sized rubber grommets at the ports where housing exits the frame
  3. Avoid excess housing length: Don’t leave extra slack in the housing inside the tube – the slack will move around and create noise
  4. Dedicated noise-damping foam: Some brands sell foam strips designed specifically for the interior of the frame

Internal routing is an unavoidable trend in modern road bikes. Once you master the right tools and techniques, you can handle every cable replacement and service job with confidence. The first time may take a while, but it gets faster and easier with experience.
