What Is Block Periodization?

Block Periodization was systematically introduced by Israeli sports scientist Vladimir Issurin in the 2000s. Its core idea is: dividing training into short (2–4 week) highly focused blocks, with each block concentrating on developing one capacity, rather than training multiple capacities simultaneously within the same period as in traditional periodization.

Core Logic: The Concentrated Loading Principle

Issurin’s theoretical foundation is the Concentrated Loading Principle: when training stimuli are highly concentrated on a single capacity, that capacity adapts faster and to a greater degree. Meanwhile, other capacities temporarily detrain, but through “maintenance” training in subsequent blocks, this detraining can be kept within an acceptable range.

The Three-Block Basic Structure

Classic block periodization consists of three types of blocks:

Block A: Accumulation Block

The following is a complete 16-week plan for amateur riders who can train 7–10 hours per week:

Round One (Weeks 1–6)

Block A1: Aerobic Accumulation (Weeks 1–3)

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Aerobic endurance 90 min @ Zone 1–2 (including 3 × 10 min Tempo)
Wednesday: Recovery ride 45 min + core training 30 min
Thursday: Aerobic endurance 75 min @ Zone 1 (steady heart rate)

Round Two (Weeks 7–12)

Repeat the A-B-C structure, but increase the training load of each block:

Block A2 (Weeks 7–9): Long ride extended to 3.5–4 hours, Tempo segments increased to 4 × 10 min

Block B2 (Weeks 10–11): Threshold segments extended to 3 × 15 min @ 95–100% FTP, add 1 Over-Under session (2 min @ 105% / 2 min @ 90% × 5)

Block C2 (Week 12): Increase to 5 × 4 min intervals, or try 3 × 5 min @ 108–115% FTP

Round Three (Weeks 13–16)

Block A3 (Weeks 13–14): Maintain aerobic volume but shorten to 2 weeks

Block B3 (Week 15): Specific threshold training, simulating the climbing duration of the target race

Block C3/Pre-Race Taper (Week 16): Taper by 40–50%, keep 2 short high-intensity sessions, prepare to race

Transition Strategies Between Blocks

Maintenance Dose

In blocks focused on developing a new capacity, a minimum maintenance dose must be scheduled to prevent excessive detraining of capacities built in previous blocks:

End of Realization → 2–3 days of complete rest (supercompensation window)

Advanced Application: Dual Block

For riders with limited time (5-6 hours per week), a shortened version of the dual block can be used:

Block X (3 weeks): Mixed aerobic + threshold
  - 2 threshold sessions + 1 long ride + 2 recovery rides

Block Y (2 weeks): High intensity + maintenance
  - 2 VO2max intervals + 1 threshold maintenance + 1 recovery ride

Recovery week (1 week): 50% reduction in volume

This 6-week cycle can be repeated 2-3 times, increasing training load each time.

Practical Application Scenarios for Taiwanese Riders

Block Design for the Wuling Challenge

With the goal of “completing the East Route Wuling Challenge in under 3 hours,” the entire climb requires sustaining approximately 200-250W (depending on body weight) for 2.5-3 hours:

  • Accumulation Phase Focus: Long-duration, low-intensity climbing (e.g., repeated Beiyi Highway, County Road 106), accumulating vertical gain
  • Conversion Phase Focus: SST climbing segments (e.g., Fengguizui × 2-3 repeats), simulating sustained output near target power
  • Realization Phase Focus: Sectional challenges on the Hehuan Mountain stretch (if feasible), or simulating target power for 60-90 minutes on the trainer

Block Design for Criteriums/Road Races

  • Accumulation Phase Focus: Base fitness + group ride adaptation
  • Conversion Phase Focus: Threshold capacity + recovery after attacks (Over-Under training)
  • Realization Phase Focus: Short sprint intervals + race simulation (breakaways, chasing back, final sprint)

  2. Blocks too long: A single block exceeding 4 weeks leads to mental burnout and over-adaptation
  3. Neglecting maintenance training: Completely skipping maintenance of previous block capacities, leading to significant regression
  4. No transition between blocks: Abrupt switching causes sudden load changes, increasing injury risk
  5. Afraid to taper: The realization phase requires a substantial reduction in training volume, which many riders feel anxious about
