The Team Time Trial (TTT) is the cycling discipline that most tests teamwork. Each member’s power output, position rotation, and fatigue management must be precisely coordinated for the team to reach the finish line at maximum speed. For amateur teams in Taiwan, TTT training not only improves race results but also significantly enhances the efficiency of everyday group ride rotations.
The Aerodynamic Foundations of TTT
Quantifying the Drafting Effect
In a team time trial, aerodynamic drag accounts for 80-90% of total resistance. Research data shows:

- The fast line pulls at target power, each rider taking 10-20 seconds
- After finishing the pull, drift into the slow line
- The slow line moves at a slightly lower speed while recovering

Influencing Factors:
- Wind speed: The stronger the headwind, the shorter the pull
- Gradient: Power differences during pulls are greater on climbs, so duration should be shortened
- Fitness differences: Weaker members can take shorter pulls
- Race stage: As fatigue builds in the latter half, shorten pull durations overall
Recommended Pull Durations:

Individual Power Management
Target power while pulling:
- Set at 85-90% of the FTP of the team’s “second-weakest” member
- Not based on the strongest rider’s capacity!
- Overall average power must allow the weakest member to finish

Protecting the Weakest
In a TTT, team results are determined by the finishing time of a designated placing (usually the 4th or 5th rider). Therefore:
Strategy 1: Weaker riders take shorter pulls
- Strong riders pull for 25 seconds / weaker riders pull for 10-12 seconds
- Energy saved by weaker riders is used to “hold on”
Strategy 2: Weaker riders do not pull
- In the latter half of the race, riders about to be dropped stop rotating
- They only need to focus on staying with the team
Strategy 3: The sacrificial strategy
- The weakest 1-2 riders rotate normally in the first half
- They are “released” in the second half, no longer waited for
- Prerequisite: the counted finishing places do not include them

Individual Training (Weekly)
Workout 1: Threshold Stability
Warm-up: 20 minutes
Main set:
3 x 10 minutes @ 90% FTP

- Practice steady, rhythmic output
Recovery between sets: 5 minutes

Warm-up Protocol
The first 30 seconds of a TTT start are crucial, so the warm-up must be thorough:
45 minutes before the start:
- 10 minutes of easy spinning (100W)
- 5 minutes gradually increasing to Zone 3
- 3 x 30 seconds @ 110% FTP (with 2-minute recovery)
- 1 x 10-second all-out sprint
- 10 minutes of easy spinning
- Line up at the start 5 minutes before the start
Starting Strategy
- The strongest 1-2 riders should take the first two pulls
- Power will be 10-15% higher than cruising pace for the first 30 seconds (to overcome inertia)
- The whole team should settle into a steady cruising pace within 45-60 seconds
Handling Unexpected Situations
A rider gets dropped:
- If the dropped rider is needed for the team’s official finishing time, the whole team slows down to wait
- If it doesn’t affect the result, let them chase back on their own or abandon
- Discuss and decide on the protocol for each scenario in advance
Flat tire:
- The rider with the flat immediately shouts “Flat!”
- The rest of the team does not wait and continues the race
- The rider changes the wheel and chases back on their own
