Complete Tubeless Tire Setup Guide: Hands-On Instructions From Scratch
Tubeless systems originated in mountain biking and have now become the mainstream standard for road and gravel bikes. They not only offer lower rolling resistance and better puncture resistance, but also allow lower tire pressures for improved comfort and grip. This article walks you through setting up a tubeless system from scratch, step by step.

Installation Steps
Step 1: Prepare the Rim
- Remove old tape: If there is old rim strip or tape on the rim, remove it completely
- Clean the rim: Thoroughly clean the inside of the rim with isopropyl alcohol to remove grease and adhesive residue
- Check rim condition: Inspect for dents, cracks, or sharp edges
Step 2: Apply Rim Tape
This is the most critical step in the whole installation process:
- Choose the correct width: The tape should be 2-4mm wider than the rim’s internal width to ensure it fully covers all spoke holes
- Start opposite the valve hole: Begin directly opposite the valve hole
- Maintain tension: Keep moderate tension while applying the tape so it lies flat and smooth
- Avoid air bubbles: Press the tape flat with your thumb or a blunt tool, making sure it fully adheres to the bottom of the rim
- Overlap area: Overlap by 10-15cm after going all the way around, finishing at the valve hole
- Press firmly: Go around the tape once more with your fingers or a tool, paying special attention to the area around the spoke holes
Common mistakes:
- Tape too narrow to cover the edges → air leaks
- Wrinkles or air bubbles when applying → poor sealing
- Insufficient tension causing the tape to loosen → prone to shifting
Step 3: Install the Valve
- Puncture a hole in the tape: Use a sharp tool to puncture a small hole at the valve hole location (not too large)
- Insert the valve from the inside: Insert the tubeless valve from the inside of the rim
- Tighten the locknut: Tighten the locknut from the outside, making sure the rubber gasket at the base of the valve seals tightly against the tape
- Confirm the seal: Gently pull the valve to confirm it doesn’t come loose
Step 4: Install the Tire (First Side)
- Confirm rotation direction: The sidewall of the tire has an arrow indicating the direction of rotation
- Install the first bead: Use your hands to push one bead of the tire into the rim
- Usually no tools needed: Tubeless tires fit tightly, but the first side should be doable by hand
Step 5: Add Sealant
There are two ways to add sealant:
Method A: Add before installing the tire (recommended for beginners)
- With only one bead installed, pour the sealant directly in
- Recommended amount: 30-40ml for road, 40-60ml for gravel
- Advantage: Simple to do, no mess
Method B: Inject through the valve (recommended for experienced riders)
- After the tire is fully installed, remove the valve core
- Use a syringe to inject sealant through the valve
- Reinstall the valve core
- Advantage: Sealant won’t spill during installation
Step 6: Install the Tire (Second Side)
- Apply soapy water: Apply soapy water to the tire bead and rim edge to significantly ease installation
- Start opposite the valve: Using both hands, start opposite the valve and push the bead into the rim
- Work toward the valve: Gradually push the bead in, finishing near the valve
- The last section may be tight: Use plastic tire levers if necessary, being careful not to damage the tape
Step 7: Inflate to Seat the Bead
This is usually the most difficult step — it requires a burst of high-volume air to “pop” the bead onto the rim:
Method 1: Tubeless Inflator
- First fill the inflator to full pressure (about 160 psi)
- Connect to the valve and release quickly
- You should hear a “pop pop” sound, indicating the bead has seated
Method 2: Air Compressor
- Set the output pressure to 60-80 psi
- Inflate rapidly
- The most effective and reliable method
Method 3: Standard Floor Pump (sometimes works)
- Make sure the tire bead is already as close to the rim as possible
- Pump rapidly and forcefully
- If the bead still won’t seat, go back to Method 1 or 2
Tips: If you repeatedly can’t seat the bead, try the following:
- Apply more soapy water to the bead and rim
- Press around the tire with your hands to make sure the bead is centered on the rim
- Reduce the amount of sealant slightly (too much may hinder seating)
Step 8: Seal Test
- Shake the wheel: Distribute the sealant evenly inside the tire
- Inflate to a higher pressure (10-15 psi above normal riding pressure) and let it sit for 30 minutes
- Apply soapy water: Apply soapy water around the valve and bead edges, and watch for bubbles
- Handle small leaks: If there’s a small leak, usually shaking the wheel to let the sealant cover it is enough
- Confirm completion: Check after 24 hours that pressure is stable (a drop of less than 5 psi is normal)
Ongoing Maintenance
Replacing Sealant
- Frequency: Every 3-6 months (dries out faster in hot summer weather)
- Method: Remove the valve core and inject fresh sealant with a syringe
- Amount: 20-30ml each time (road bike), adjust based on remaining residue
Pre-Ride Checks
- Squeeze the tire by hand to check pressure before every ride
- Measure precisely with a gauge every 1-2 weeks
- Tubeless tires naturally lose air faster than tubed tires, potentially dropping 5-10 psi per week
Roadside Emergency Handling
Even with a tubeless system, it’s still recommended to carry:
- A spare inner tube (for severe damage)
- Tubeless repair strips (bacon strips): for larger punctures
- A mini pump or CO2 inflator
- Tire levers
