Hehuan Mountain: Taiwan’s High-Mountain Highway Rivaling Wuling

Hehuan Mountain (approx. 3,416m elevation) sits adjacent to Wuling (the highway’s highest point at 3,275m) and forms the core section of Taiwan’s Central Cross-Island Highway (Provincial Highway 14A). There are two main routes to climb Hehuan Mountain: the East Approach (from Hualien) and the West Approach (from Taichung), each offering different challenges and scenery.

  • Acclimatize first: Recommended to stay overnight in Wushe the day before
  • Slow down: Cardiopulmonary function is limited at high altitude; don’t force your usual pace
  • Stay warm: Summit temperatures can be 15-20°C lower than at lower elevations
  • Windbreaker for descent: Regardless of the season, always carry a windbreaker for the descent

Personal Challenge vs. Completing the Toplus Wuling Challenge

The Hehuan Mountain route is also the race course for the Toplus Wuling Cycling Challenge (starting from Puli, with a longer total distance). If you’re preparing for the Toplus Challenge, the West Approach of Hehuan Mountain is the best training ground.
