Ashigara Pass (Minamiashigara Side)

A 10.86 km climb gaining about 642 m on Kanagawa Prefectural Route 78, with a gentle opening and a steeper hairpin-lined finale beneath views of Mount Fuji. ## Overview Ashigara Pass is a historic crossing on the Kanagawa–Shizuoka border and a popular Kanto cycling climb. This approach follows paved public Route 78 through Jizodo to the pass. It is not the separately managed Ashigara trunk forest road mentioned in current works notices. ## Climb analysis Four rebuilt sections total 10.86 km and about 642 m of ascent, equivalent to roughly 5.9%. The settled lower road is gentler, while the decisive gradients arrive after Jizodo. Strava's zero-ascent summary is incorrect, so the high-resolution reconstructed value is used. ## Riding tips - Stay conservative on the gentle first half. - A 30–34T largest sprocket is useful for the finale. - Fill bottles before the mountain section. - Avoid snow, ice, fog, strong wind and heavy rain. - Keep left through hairpins and manage brake heat on the long descent. Public Route 78 has no fixed closure currently posted, but Ashigara Pass–Jizodo is subject to emergency rain closure at 150 mm cumulative or 50 mm hourly rainfall. Snow, ice or damage may also trigger temporary control. Check Kanagawa's current notices; forest-road works are unrelated. Dry, clear days in April–June and September–November; cancel for heavy rain, snow, ice, fog, strong wind or restrictions.
