When To Use It
- Summer workouts: VDOT T/I paces may be unrealistic at 30°C with high humidity. Adjust 3-8% slower to preserve quality.
- Race warm-up planning: Check race-day weather and estimate target pace drift; a marathon can change by several minutes with small temperature shifts.
- Hilly routes: Break a target time into kilometer segments and adjust each kilometer by grade.
- Dew point vs temperature: Dew point reflects absolute humidity and running stress better than air temperature alone.

Heat Acclimation 10-14 Day Protocol
Summer race preparation: build heat tolerance over two weeks instead of simply enduring race day.
Physiological changes (Périard et al. 2015, Scand J Med Sci Sports): after 10-14 days of heat acclimation → plasma volume +10-12%, core temperature -0.43°C, sweat rate +11-14%, and sweat sodium concentration -22%.

Decay phase:
- Adaptation decays by about 2.5% per day after stopping (Daanen 2018).
- → About a month without exposure nearly resets the gains.
- → Finishing heat acclimation 14 days before race day can still retain >70% of the benefit.
Alternative: if outdoor heat training is not feasible, 30 minutes of sauna daily for 3-7 days before the race (Scoon 2007, J Sci Med Sport) may provide partial benefit: plasma volume +7.1% and 5K performance +1.9%.

WBGT Thresholds for Race Cancellation / Modification
ACSM 2007 standard: a heat-safety framework used by marathon organizers worldwide.
What is WBGT? WBGT = 0.7×wet bulb + 0.2×globe + 0.1×dry bulb. It accounts for temperature + humidity + radiant heat + wind and better reflects core-temperature risk than “feels like” temperature alone.

Estimating WBGT without equipment: WBGT ≈ 0.567 × Tdb + 0.393 × e + 3.94, where e (vapor pressure kPa) = 0.1333 × exp(18.956 − 4030.18 / (Tdb + 235)). Example: 32°C with 70% humidity → WBGT ≈ 27.5°C (high risk).
