In middle- and long-distance swimming, going out too fast can quickly collapse technique and stroke length. Thompson et al. (2003) compared even, positive (fast-start) and negative pacing in breaststroke and found positive pacing produced significantly higher blood lactate and perceived exertion than even/negative pacing — the cost of an aggressive start is an earlier shift to anaerobic metabolism, with stroke length and rate efficiency dropping as a result. Most swimmers benefit from a slightly conservative first 10-20%, a steady middle and a higher stroke rate in the final 15-25%. Short races can tolerate faster starts, but the first segment still should not damage the stroke.
